Senses - Valentines day review
Well I had heard very good things about Senses last few months so decided to finally take the plunge on Valentines day.
We arrived a few minutes early and were graciously escorted to the bar until the table was ready.
The Valentine's menu was a $125 prix fix and $45 for wine accompaniment.
The amuse bouche was a soft shell crab that was adequate but nothing extraordinary. The waiter then came and poured the champagne for the second course. About 30 minutes later they were about to bring out the third course when I informed them that they had brought the wine but forgot the second course. The second course was pounded tuna with saffron sauce with prawn serviche. Again this course was ok but nothing great. The third course was lobster trio. The lobster bisque was decent, tempura lobster roll was average and the lobster serviche was ok as well.
By this point I was not very impressed so far. The next course was peking duck in sweet potatoe with a chocolate type sauce. This was served in a bowl with outside of the bowl with hot water and I forget the plant but gave off a very nice scent. The duck was great and the chocolate sauce went excellent with the Shiraz. Instead of a sorbet the next dish was spiced h2o ... with slush. Again this was served with a hot rock that had rosemary on it and the sxent and slush was very refreshing. Next course was beef tenderloin, beef ratatouille, and beet minced with fois gras sauce. This entire dish was very good. The dessert was Passion Fruit pudding, hot chocolate, passion fruit (dont remember) and chocolate truffle. The dessert was ok. All in all the dinner was ok with the duck being the only dish that really stands out primarily due to the scent addition. The service was good even with the little screw up and the manager did apologize personally on the way out.
I am a big fan of Susur and was expecting a comparable experience here but felt it came up a bit short and with the number of nice restaurants in Toronto in this price range I doubt I will be back anytime soon.
