Winterlicious review: Acqua Ristorante

I went to the Acqua Ristorante on Front St. last night for the last day of Winterlicious, and was quite disappointed.

The reason for this is that my wife and I chose a "safe" menu -- we both have different tastes -- so had to find a selection we both liked. Because of that, I chose items that I could get, and have tasted better, at other places.

The ambience was great and the service was fine too. I have read some Winterlicious posts here about people being seated by draughty doors, near the aisle etc... but we had "the best seats in the house" according to the guy at the door. And they were good, right next to the waterfall wall, very relaxing.

I had the mussels to start. A bit cold, and not enough of them, but I realise the portions are smaller for the Winterlicious promotion.

For mains I had the ribeye steak, with a mushroom potato gratin, asparagus and a cabernet sauvignon reduction. Not bad, steak was cooked to my liking, but again, could have eaten more.

For dessert I had the creme brulee. Being my favourite dessert, I have had this in a lot of places and feel qualified to compare it. Although it was the best part of the meal for me, it won't win any awards in my Creme Brulee Memory Bank.

So, after a beer, some wine and a cocktail for my wife, the whole bill including tax and tip was around $115.

The upside is that I spotted some other items on the main menu that I definitely want to try, so in that respect, the Winterlicious promotion worked for Acqua in that I will be going back another time.

Next year I will choose a restaurant that has items on the Winterlicious selection that I've never tried before.
