Elias Surprise

I've been going to Elias Greek Restaurant on Pape for decades. Years ago, one could order directly from the steam trays in the kitchen. The food was, um, filling, but the place was fun in a kinky kind of a way.

A couple of years ago, my wife, kids and I decided to check out the place for Valentine's Day evening.

The food was, again, not memorable, but the celebration was delightlfully tacky. They hired opera singers for the night to provide the waiter services.

They were inept but charming, and a live aria for my wife was entertaining. The management even dressed up a young male relative as cupid, who made the rounds with a Polaroid. It was a memorable--not culturally uplifting--or a dining milestone--but it was fun.

Wishing to make reservations again this year, I found that Elias had closed (probably a long awaited death) and had reopened as "Avra".

I've already been told by the chef that no such Valentine's grandstanding will be provided, but that will be fine if the food is exceptionally good.

Has anyone attended there yet? What's it like?

Thanks.
