What's with Canoe?

I think I'm going crazy! :) Winterlicious reservations start today and I can't get through to Canoe (one of the participating restaurants.) I have the right phone number -- is anyone else having this problem?

  1. Our phone system in Royal Bank Tower is screwed up today due to an electrical fire. Could be the same problem.

      Thanks Kimmy. That's probably it. Oh well -- I can't get through, then no one else can either, so I guess I still have a chance at a reservation.

      I hear Avalon is a Winterlicious restaurant too...might try there.

        Please don't be too harsh on these restaurants during a festival such as this. I'm certain that 95% of the people who will go to a place like canoe next week are the same people who will never go at any other time of the year. So, basically, these festival bargain hunters are taking up prime real estate at basement bargain prices, making it impossible for the regular clientelle (the ones who carry the restaurant loyally throughout the year) to find or enjoy a deserved table.
        But please enjoy yourselves. And don't sit at your table for ages after you're finished. Let the restaurant have their table back so that they may have the chance to benefit from the traffic. And don't stay too late, 'cause the staff are overworked and underpaid (that's right, I said underpaid. Remember that you are tipping on a $20 menu, and not the usual $200 check average.)
        Splurge on a glass of wine; you can have hot water and lemon when you get home.

    2. ...winterlicious reservations started last week. Early reservations were *supposed* to be restricted only to AmEx card holders, but Canoe (and others) were letting pretty much anyone make 'em...

      1. I had the same problem with Canoe yesterday. I was getting busy signals all day. Eventually I gave up and made reservations elsewhere.

          I had the same problem w. Canoe. They got flooded with calls for Winterlicious. I was one of the early callers because I had a Amex on Jan 8 and believe it or not, when I reached them around noon, they had no Fri or Sat bookings. I booked for a Wed night at some ridiculously early dinner time and was told that I would have to be out after 2 hours.

          Here is what my experience was like:
          Around 10:30, I kept dialing and getting a busy signal. Finally, I got the recorded message. Then I had to keep hitting '1' because the reservations line was busy. When I finally got through, she put me on HOLD!! I was on hold for 10 minutes before I hung up because I had to run to a meeting. I tried again around noon and it took me about a half hour before I got through again to a live person. She put me on HOLD again. Urgh! It was quite frustrating.

          I've eaten there before and the food was excellent. This is the only reason I would put up with such a poor reservation system.

          I booked 2 other restaurants that are also quite popular and I didn't run into the same problems with trying to make a reservation. They also had decent dining times and didn't tell me that I had a time limit on my dining experience.
