Duckworth's Fish and Chips
Tried out Duckworth's this weekend. Had the halibut and chips with gravy. So good. Took it home and the halibut was still crispy! Never had that happened before with a fish n chips place.
The menu is barebones. Other items include coleslaw, haddock, pop...
Great fish n chips!!! Located at 2282 Kingston Rd. in Scarborough (between Midland and Kennedy)

Duckworth's on the Danforth is great, but another good option is the Victoria Restaurant at the corner of Queen St.E and Victoria St. right across from St.Mikes hospital.

re: the spin
Tried the Victoria Restaurant tonight. It's a cute little place and our waitress was very pleasant. However, IMHO, the fish and chips can't compare with Duckworth's. First of all, the Victoria Restaurant is not serving halibut anymore. They are serving haddock instead. And the batter on the fish is way too thick. The fries were okay, but not as good as Duckworth's. The cole slaw was okay, but I prefer the creamy cole slaw at Duckworth's. I really wanted to like this place because it is very close to where I live. But I will continue to make the trek to Duckworth's on the Danforth because IMHO it's the best in town! By the way, haddock, chips and cole slaw cost $8.95 at the Victoria Restaurant. At Duckworth's you can get halibut, chips, cole slaw, bread and butter, and tea or coffee for $9.50.

Duckworth has been doing fish right since the 1930's. In 1984 I would travel from Mississauga to p/u my girlfriend at Kingston rd and Galloway rd in Scarborough. She directed me to Duckworth's and there was a lineup of people outside of the store waiting to get in to eat. I have never seen this, especially at a fish and chip place. Offspring of the Duckworth clan were running the place. I do not like fish at all. I can only handle Halibut and I have been to a lot of fish&chip joints. Duckworth's is worth the drive for me.

Wow, fish and chips again! There are several threads regarding this topic and the last one had over a hundred posts! You should check it out 'cause it had other recommendations not posted here so far. As for Duckworth's IMHO it's very good (the Kingston Rd. location is way better then the Danforth one). I'm in the east end and people here go to either Highland Fish and Chips (Ellesmere and Conlins) or Malt and Salt (Lawson and Centennial). I prefer Malt and Salt. Very good price, very good fish and their batter is better than Reliable's. Reliable is another good place to try (near Carlaw and Queen St. E.).

This is a pretty old review, but the message still holds true. Have tried all three Duckworth establishments, and Duckworth's on Kingston Road is currently the best in Toronto. The place is small, but it is hopping with staff during the busy hours, very polite and efficient staff. There is no stale oil aroma there. The secret, says one of their long-time employees, is that they don't fry a variety of things, such as onion rings, in their oil.
We tried Duckworth's in Orillia, which is run by a very nice couple. The young man is related to Len Duckworth, who established the Danforth Avenue Duckworth's. Although the site in Orillia is very nice, the fish and chips simply aren't that good. They offer a huge variety of items on their menu.
I guess the secret is to specialize in fish and chips only.

On a summers day in 1984, I found myself standing in a line-up with about a dozen other patrons all waiting to get into Duckworth's Fish & Chips. And now, here it is August 2008 and over the past 24 years I'm still loyal to the Duckworth's way of fish and chips. Duckworth's. 70 years of doing fish and chips right.

My family has been going to Duckworth's Fish and Chips since they opened in ~1938. This place is an institution. We have had four generations of Fincher's going there for their amazing crispy Halibut and fresh cut fries. I live in Lewiston New York and am now continuing the family tradition. I know you must think we are crazy to travel that far but when you like your fish and chips a certain way...This is your only option (and no we are not otherwise picky eaters). We have been taking our daughter there since she was old enough to eat a french fry (she's three now) and I hope the experience becomes a tradition she shares with her children! Keep up the good work Duckworth's!!! My family would be devastated were you ever not be available.

There is no doubt about it Al's Fish & Chips at 109 McCaul St. is the best in the city. The halibut is fresh the batter light and crisp, and the fries cut fresh. This place has changed my perception of fish and chips. Last time I had a plate with half greek salad, half order of fries and a lovely piece of Halibut. Simply the best
Its a little hard to find so I recommend calling 416.351.8722 -

We go to Duckworths on the Danforth near Main and the fish and chips are usually very good but were kinda greasy when i picked up an order last week. THe shrimp is great.

All my childhood I grew up having duckworth's fish & chips I moved away in 1974. I visit from time to time and I always make A point of going and having my fill. I don't have any family left in T.O.and I probably won't make it there anymore, and I was wondering if anyone could give me the recipe for their batter as this was the main reason I went there. thanks

re: rkb
Picking up anything " fried " for take out and wrapped doesn't work as the crispy gets soggy. Be they fish nd chips, spring rolls, I get out to the car and open them so they won't continue cooking in wet steam!
I used to live at Birchmount & Danforth and Linsmore And Danforth. Couldn't bet on which one I have been in more, with decades away and sometimes visits to either one, pretty even odds!!

Got to agree with you. Duckworth's is great! Are there any other fish and chip places in the city that anybody would recomend?

re: Steve
Another place talked about that I've been is Harbord Fish and Chips
It's on the south side of Harbord, between Bathurst and Spadina (closer to Bathurst)
They use a tempura batter and give your really good portions....also the fries amazing.....and they wrap it up in newspaper
It's not really a restaurant. I believe there is a small countertop inside and a few picnic tables outside......but not in this weather!!!
I reccommend trying the fish n chips though!-

re: Matt
If you are in the West End... specifically Mississausage there is a great place called Applewood Fish & Chips. It is located at 1020 Burnhamthorpe close to the intersection at Tomkein. The sign in the window says it has been run by the same family for 20 years. I got a new job yesterday and all I wanted was fish and chips to celebrate.
Wow, the fish is always great... and since I prefer cole slaw to a boat load of chips... it really works for me, as the chips are so-so.
Halibut is the right choice here... tempura like and always fresh. I have a friend who loves Harbord so I have to try it soon.
Fish is brain food!

re: Steve
had high street fish and chips last nite (55 Underhill Drive - lawrence and dvp area)
ordered 'two and a few' - 20.50$ eat in (two pieces of fish and a few chips)
the fish was halibut, there are other fish choices on the menu
it was excellent - battered old school and the chips fresh cut and cooked to perfection
added a small order of coleslaw to start - it was 'creamy' style, cold and flavourfuli also like penrose and olde york
grew up on don's /north york - long gone -
