cafe braziliano

I just had a quick lunch above (or maybe it's Braziliano Cafe? I can't remember) and had to rave about it.

It is located on Dundas just west of Bathurst, on the north side (next to the big lumber store). The place is a combination coffee shop and lunch counter (although I think they sell the food into the evening, or as long as there is some). It is a basic Portuguese/Brazilian eatery, unpretentious, catering to the locals (while I was there, there was a constant stream of workers from the nearby lumber shop), and most importantly offering cheap and tasty food, with an excellent coffee.

First the coffee - we had an espresso and a latte, and both were perfect. The owners roast their coffee, and know how to brew it as well. The coffee has deep flavour, with an almost chocolatey finish.

Next, the food (mostly Italian and Portuguese staples). It is good, and of incedible value. The most expensive item on the menu is $6 and that is a large plate special - the day I went, it included a veal cutlet, roasted potatoes, salad and vegetables. I had a rice ball with tomato sauce and it was delicious. The rice ball was bigger than in most places, and was stuffed with cheese, meat and vegetables. It came to $1.75 ($1.50 without the sauce). In total, we paid $6 for two rice balls with sauce, one espresso and one latte.

Be warned - offering this kind of value, and good service (all the stuff were super friendly and efficient), it's no surprise that the place is packed. There are some tables, but they go quickly so I would recommend avoiding lunch hours (they do take out). The good news is that they are soon moving across the street to a bigger space.
