Need birthday dinner recommendation

I'd like to go out for a nice meal, preferably centrally located in Toronto. Someone suggested Herbs, but I found Herbs to be a bit expensive though I did enjoy the food. I was thinking perhaps of La Palette. Are there any other suggestions in this category? (Bouchon? A nice steakhouse?)

I always enjoy Le Paradis. The steak au poivre is delicious. I think the prices are very reasonable too. The only problem is that sometimes they don't take reservations for large(over 6)parties no matter how early you book.

I'm a great fan of Le Paradis too. Great food but I think it too 'casual' for a special occasion. It's where I go when I don't want to dress up (or even change). Instead, I'd recommend Pastis Express (Yonge oppsite the Summerhill Liquor store). It's slightly more expensive (but not much) and also has a bistro style menu (including steak frites) but feels much more upscale. And there's a good chance of 'celebrity-spotting' too. And it seems much lighter with the large window, whereas Paradis has a heavier, darker feel.

Casual but with great food is pretty much what I want. It doesn't have to be formal. If it feels like a "special occasion" meal, than that's fine.
