Due to extreme childhood conditioning I love Sara Lee Banana Cake. No recipes please; sadly, I love this processed, frozen cake better than homemade. And I can't find it anywhere!!! I think it's been a few years since I've seen it in Toronto. I used to find it mostly at variety stores... not the grocery store. Anybody???

Hey Jules.....

I fully understand the childhood loves of simpler times. Of course, my Irish upbringing means a love of British Dairy Milk and Tayto Crisps, but I DO know that a place called "Almost Perfect" in the 1100 block of Sheppard Ave West used to carry your cake. Having said that, I haven't been there in 6 months or so, but it's worth a visit, not particularily for the "high and mighty" foods-of-the-month that many food snobs here may seek, but other foods that an all-around food lover (like myself) can appreciate and can find nowhere else.

Good look on the search...

Just remember one thing with Almost Perfect. You never know what they'll have. Their inventory changes on a weekly basis. They did have Sara Lee cakes there the last time I was there, but that was a few months ago too.

I initially decided not to go because Sheppard is a little outside of my personal boundaries (I'm a downtown snob and not really comfortable north of Eglinton... ;) OK seriously I don't drive and have no reason to be up there, so...

But I'm a little intrigued now, what kind of store is this? Grocery store, specialty store or a well-stocked variety?

It's a type of discount store, but they stock only frozen foods. I've stopped in and found frozen croissants (2.99 a dozen, buy 2, get 1 free); they seem to have a large variety of Sarah Lee and other frozen desserts. I've seen steaks, seafood, quiches.
I believe the Almost Perfect is because the packages are not sealed correctly or the product does not meet quality control - nothing is spoiled, but it may be near it's sell by date. Quite often the maker's name does not appear and the product is just in the inside wrappings. I've bought stuff and some was good, some not - but that's normal with frozen stuff.

Guess what I found? They sell these cakes in Australia (but evidently not in North America)! See the link here: http://www.saraleebakery.com.au/tmpl.jsp?page=prodlist&list=1&pcod=Iced+Cake&poca=1&list=1

Like all of you, I absolutely loved these cakes too.

I have the same fond memories of Sara Lee banana cake (the one with the cream cheese icing). I have been trying to find this cake for years, which I have not eaten since my childhood in New York. I 'googled' it with great hopes and found your thread. I can not find it anywhere in Seattle. If I could I would probably buy it weekly.

Nice surprise to see my old thread bumped up :)
One of the reasons I love this cake is that it was the only variety store, processed treat that my mother not only deemed acceptable but actually craved. I remember bringing home chocolate McCain cake once instead - oh, the wrath!
I have also found a cake recipe that works as a substitute for me. I use a simple icing sugar, butter, vanilla, milk icing and it is close enough to what I remember, which was not cream cheese icing - I will not argue this point though, I could be confused, but happily so.
Please come back and update us if you do cover it on your website.

There used to be a Sarah Lee Bakery on Orenda Road in Brampton.
I haven't been in years, but I think it may still be there since it came up in a google search:

I used to love their personal cheesecakes that really weren't cheesecakes...
