Iranian Sweets - Close, but no Polaky

This topic started on the Canada Board. Here’s a summary of the progress so far.

I have been trying to find the Iranian sweet 'disks' - about the size of a loonie which are predominantly hard sugar (e.g. like brulee topping) but including flavours such as saffron, lemon peel, and coconut (those are the flavours I've tried). The box referred to 'Polaky & Nabat'. We subsequently discovered that nabat means sugar.

Thanks to suggestions from respondents I discovered Shirini Sara bakery on Leslie (who didn’t stock the sugar disks but thought they’d be available somewhere in Toronto and suggested locations). I struck out in Scarborough, but when the snow cleared ventured north to Yonge between Finch and Steeles. Here I found partial success. The first grocery store I tried, clutching my few remaining sugar disks, immediately said ‘ Oh, you’re looking for (phonetically) ‘poo LACK ee’. Sorry we don’t stock it and don’t know who does’. By stopping in every grocery store/tea house/restaurant I finally struck a small disk of gold. This was the saffron version, which came in a 1 Kg box ($3.99 + tax). But it was the last box in the store. Encouraged, I persevered and eventually found more of the same box at Asy’s Market 5545 Yonge St (just south of Finch). The box is branded ‘Tavazo’ but contains little other English except Ingredients: Sugar, Glocose, saffron, &…. The assistant was extremely helpful and said that Polaky was her favourite flavour – it has pieces of lemon peel in the disk which gives a touch of bitterness to offset the sweetness. She was ‘almost certain’ they had some – but unfortunately not. It seems there are checkboxes on the side of the package to indicate the flavour – but the exporter hadn’t checked them off. So a number of the boxes were opened for me and we found a ‘plain’ version (sugar only), which is very attractive as these have different scripts and pictures incorporated into them. But again I got the last box (incidentally it listed the same ingredients – despite the absence of saffron).
They have offered to order the Polaky for me, so I hope to report full success shortly. But they still have some of the saffron disks in stock if anyone’s in the area. The instructions are to place them in your mouth and sip unsweetened tea over them. But we prefer them as straight candy (or substitute for a fortune cookie).
