Any fruit pies in GTA similar to The Pie Plate (NOTL)?

  • 6

Had a fantastic peach/blueberry pie at The Pie Plate on my way home from NOTL.

Is there any shop in GTA that does fruit pies in a similar way? Their crust and sweetness level of the fruits is just perfect for us, as the pie was gone within seconds.

  1. I pretty much live at The Pie Plate. No one does pies quite as well as they do. It helps that there is so much glorious fruit grown all around them. The closest you will get in Toronto is at The Flaky Tart. Slightly different style (a touch sweeter), but delicious in their own way.

    1. Oh, how I wish there were. The best pies in Toronto were at Queen of Tarts on Roncesvalles. Sadly, the shop closed about 4 or 5 years back. I do hope you tried The Pie Plate's cream pies, too. Their banana cream and chocolate cream pies are incredibly delicious: real whipped cream, fabulous crust, wonderful flavour, not overly sweet. (I usually buy a few of the small pies in different flavours rather than one big one.)

I didn't see any cream pies, are they usually kept in a cooler? I only saw the fresh fruit pies sitting on the rack.

Anyone try freezing their pies to consume later? Since I don't go to that area very often, I'm tempted to buy 3-4 and just freeze a bunch.

The cream pies are kept in the refrigerated case at the front. If you didn't see any, it's because they were sold out or you were there too early for them to have been put out yet. In general, you are best ordering the cream pies ahead of time, as they sell out quickly. They have three standard kinds: banana cream, coconut cream and chocolate cream. And seasonally, they have peach custard pies and strawberry custard pies. All their pies come in individual tart size and full pie size. The peach custard pie is one of the best things I've ever eaten and I eagerly await Niagara peach season just for those pies. And the chocolate cream and banana cream pies are minor addictions of mine. They are perfect.

Pies freeze well. Go for it. :)

For freezing, your best bet would be to order them unbaked; this way you can bake them "from scratch" straight from the freezer and it would be like having freshly baked pie rather than reheated frozen pie.

      2. I bought several pies from yummy stuff on west queen west last summer. They were always fresh with minimal ingredients allowing the fruit and crust to stand out best. All the new bakeries stole away my business this summer.

        Order ahead to avoid disappointment!
