ISO a tasty Holstein Schnitzel?

Have you had one at a place you'd recommend?

I've been craving one lately and sadly, my previous go-to spot for that dish, Silver Swan is long gone.

iirc from a Google search a few weeks back, there are a few restaurants in town serving them but I'd really rather try one favored by you.

Appreciate all suggestions?

  1. Lederhosen is my recommendation. Blaue Gans also serves a chicken schnitzel a la Holstein.

Blaue Gans has has a pork schnitzel that is delicious. Since I am too lazy to Google at the moment, forgive me, The Holstein is the most popular dairy cow in the US. ( Jersey cows give creamier milk). I used to live in cow country ( Vt.) Bulls or steers are used for meat. Holstein steers are eaten as calves ( as far as I know). I don't think Holstein beef if its sold is going to taste better than more common beef , like Angus. Definitely won't be as good as Japanese beef. Just seems strange that people commercially selling Holstein beef.

I always though schnitzel a la Holstein meant it was served with a fried egg on top and had nothing to do with the breed of cow. But I could be wrong.

Looks like you are correct, it's just a style of Schnitzel. I stick to my Jaeger Schnitzel. But I did discover, that Holstein Steer meat is sold commercially. It's not that plentiful though.

Fried egg on top is the distinguishing characteristic of "a la Holstein" but imo, it's the combination of that perfectly fried egg combined with the anchovies, capers & lemon that make the dish a true taste treat!

Appreciate the suggestions & look forward to checking one out soon!

    2. Heidelberg (2nd/86) has it. They also have the best potato pancakes. For dessert, their German pancake (it's thin and almost plate-sized). A foodie friend also recommends their roast duck.

Heidelberg serves an excellent version. and i always start with their liver dumpling soup. a very light broth to counteract the richness of the liver dumpling. needs to be at least 20 degrees cooler for me to order it though.
