good brunch around yonge and eglington?

I know I read something about this recently but I can't find it! Two of us for Saturday, reservations or a lack of line up preferred. Help! I've been alone with mini firefly in the east end too much lately! :)

My brunch at Lil Baci was very disappointing last month.

Goodbite is my go-to greasy spoon.

Simple Bistro takes reservations for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. http://simplebistro.com/

Prima, do you think they might have just been having an off day on your last visit? Because I know you've enjoyed Lil Baci in the past.

            1. re: kwass

It's quite possible it was just an off day. When I tried to correct the situation by mentioning the issues with the food to the server, almost nothing was done. If the kitchen was training a new cook that day, you'd think the kitchen would be more careful with watching the quality control of the orders that were going out of the kitchen. And I'd hope a server would notice when home fries are burnt or the hollandaise is ridiculously skimpy. I really liked my brunch at Lil Baci in the spring, but my last experience was bad enough that I'd rather give other restaurants my brunch business. Maybe I'll give them another chance in a few months.

Here's what I wrote about my most recent brunch:

Yes. One bad experience can definitely overshadow all of the good ones.

      1. Boom has a wide menu and Mars and Good Bite are options. One of them has these very nice fresh bran muffins (and a huge menu)... I think it's Mars.

Thanks ET. I used to live near a boom and didn't really like it that much. I'll check out mars and good bite. :)

Good Bite is fantastic, but it's a bacon/egg greasy spoon kinda place, as prima noted. Keep that in mind if you're looking for "classier", more traditional brunch fare. There is usually a line if you go during brekky rush hours.

Although I've never been, Hannah's Kitchen looks like they do a nice brunch.

Thanks magic! This is all awesome! :)

Coquine and Uncle Betty's also serve brunch.

                  1. re: prima

Thanks Prima, does anyone know if the lines at uncle bettys are still super long? I've wanted to try it since I met the owners at an event but it always looked crazy busy when I went by. I'm going to have around a 45 min travel time hence the wanting reservations or lack of lines. :)

                    1. re: LexiFirefly

About 7-8 people in line @ betty's when I went by last Sunday around noon.

                      1. re: LexiFirefly

I usually pass by there around 9:30 on Saturdays and I've never seen a line up. But I'm not sure what it's like later in the day.

            2. Good Bite is good greasy spoon- no resos so go early.
Sunset Grill and Boom are pretty much the same thing.
              Mars sucks ass..
There's a few Italian joints north of Broadway that do brunch ,can't remember their names. I wonder if SIP does brunch?

Y&E is pretty much a brunch dead zone(I know I live here), but if you get here early enough, you'll beat the crowds.

La Vecchia does brunch. I found it meh the last time I went, around 4 years ago. Amore also does brunch, but I've never tried it.

                1. re: prima

Yes!La Vecchia and Amore! Never been to either so I can't recommend. Hanna's Kitchen took over a bigger and nicer spot south of Eglinton, maybe worth checking it out.

                  1. re: petek

Went to Amore once, years ago.

Standard brunch fare, forgettable. Poor service experience. Never went back.

They've been there forever though. Some people must really like it.

Mars isn't worthy on any sort of CH chatter. Basically it's Fran's. Sysco heaven. Unless they've upped their game.

              2. Lexi, if you're willing to go over to Bayview, L'Avenue does brunch (with reservations). It's been a few months since Mr Vuitton and I have been, but it was very good with good service. (Not sure what type of brunch atmosphere you are looking for). I had the quiche - not too dense, flavourful. It was ham based if I recall. Mr Vuitton had the omelette.

Thanks CC! I spoke to my "date" lastnight and she wants to try lil baci. She really likes their dinner, considering she's pregnant she gets to pick! :) I'll report back on how it is!

                2. Sorry it took me so long to respond! Back to school has been a little hectic! :) As I said we went to lil baci. The food was fine. I thought the hollandaise on my Benny was a little light, but it was potent, I honestly wouldn't want any more. It was my first truffle oil experience, by choice, in six years and it was... fine. We both thought the "toast" was odd. While a cute idea with the pizza bread they really should give steak knives or something. We both ate our various egg dishes off the top and then picked it up. Usually I love a nice side salad with my eggs bit this seemed an afterthought in the worst possible way. It wasn't bad it was just meh. Mixed greens with olive oil and that's about it.

The most confusing was the French toast, we split it for dessert. It came with two quarter sized dollops of mascarpone cream and about 8 stewed (seemed like from frozen) berries. We both kept cutting into it thinking it was stuffed and were left bewildered.

It seemed like at least one other table was complaining and I heard the servers comment on that in a negative way. Overall the company was amazing and I had a great time, but I think we'll try somewhere else next time. :)

I'm sorry to hear that Lexi. I was hoping that you'd love the place. I haven't tried it for brunch yet, but have been wanting to. How disappointing!!

                    1. re: LexiFirefly

Ah, that's too bad. Lil Baci is bad to worse during normal service, so I wouldn't imagine brunch to be any better.
