Tartex, empanada wrappers and huacatay, where are you?

  • 7

I've been bested in my search for three ingredients and need help please! Does anyone know where I can find huacatay (either paste or dried), empanada wrappers and Tartex (vegetarian pate that comes in small tins)?

Capers used to carry the empanada wrappers but they haven't been there since Whole Foods took over. I've tried Killarney Market and South China Seas for the huacatay but no luck. And I know someone in Vancouver has Tartex but I can't remember who. Off to Gourmet Warehouse now but if anyone knows where I can find these locallly (not online) I'd be grateful!

Chicha's uses huacatay in one of their dressings per the current online menu. Maybe get in touch with them about suppliers? You might also enquire at Fresh Is Best on West Broadway. They are nice folks and might even bring this or the wrappers in if they don't have them, but they're pretty dialed on suppliers so could perhaps steer you in the right direction if not. And maybe even Los Dos Amigos on 41st, though I think it skews more Mexican than South American.

    Good luck!

Fresh is Best has Goya's empanada wrappers in the freezer behind the counter, packets of 12, saw 'em when I was there this afternoon. They don't have huacatay but would be happy to try to help track it down.

sadly Los Dos Amigos is kaput. No idea if they've moved. OP could also try Los Guerreros on Kingsway, although the extent of their Peruvian items are usually the aji type sauces and chicha morada powder.

Los Guerreros! That is the place I was trying to remember on K'way just past Joyce. I even Google mapped to try and find it but no dice. Nice one, ELS.

Two bad about LDA. Haven't been for a while, obvi.

Thanks, all. Appreciate you taking the time to help. Chicha's is one block from my work so I'll hit them up for their supplier tomorrow. Glad for the Fresh is Best tip too, although I'm now leaning toward not being so damn lazy and just making them myself :)

Persia Foods took over what used to be Sureno Market at 1730 Commercial. They have the empanada wrappers (only that location). They also carry a lot of other Mexican products but I don't think I have seen the other two you are talking about.

Quick update in case Google brings anyone here in future. Chicha's gets their huacatay from Killarney Market so I was on the right track...they are just out of stock right now. Apparently there are no other sources in Vancouver so they bring it in from Seattle when that happens. Thanks again for the tip!
