Where to stop for lunch on the way to Air&Space?

Will be driving in Thursday for the weekend from Philly. First stop is Air&Space so looking to eat lunch before we get there. Where is a good place to stop for a quick not expensive lunch? Preferably no chains. Loved Bourbon's grilled cheese when it came with baked beans. Anyplace else to get that?

  1. There are so many great chioices before you get 'downtown,' especially places that are fantastic but come under the heading of Chowhounds-only. #1 suggestion is the jerk chicken at Just Jerk in Lanham, MD; it's a complete hole-in-the-wall but a very serious place. You can eat there, though it doesn't look it from the outside. Probably the best jerk chicken outside Boston Bay in Jamaica.

Off New York Ave in DC, reallly great homemade corned beef at Deli City. I actually love the corned beef/pastrami combo. This place looks awful but the corned beef is super-serious.

In the same neighborhood, Panda Gourmet, I go for their Shaanxi specialties like the li piang cold steamed noodles, lamb skewers, and the lamb and bread soup.

    1. good call littlecmad as once you get close to Air+Space it's game over.

if you take the NY Ave exit as Steve suggests (and I would as the spaghetti strands of roadways become ever more complicated the farther South you go) but find NY to be a little skeevy go South on maybe 11th or 8th or 4th and check the current comments for Capitol Hill/Barracks Row.

      1. You do mean the Air & Space on the Mall, not the Air & Space's Udar-Hazy Center out near Dulles? Because if you're headed out that way, I suggest the Bon Chon or grazing giant H-Mart off of Rt. 50.

If you mean the one on the Mall, I'd suggest Canopy pit beef in Ellicott City. Or maybe not. Try that on the way back for dinner.

        1. I can't believe no one suggested Mitsitam Cafe in the Museum of the American Indian. Right next door to Air & Space on the Mall. Very healthy, delicious food from different regions of North America.

Because the OP asked for not expensive. :-)

I guess that depends on your definition. I can make it through for less than $12. It's definitely the best value for the $ on the Mall.

Yeah, I love Mitsitam but it's pricey.

            2. Anyplaces with grilled cheese? Should I try GCDC or The Big Cheese truck at L'Enfant Plaza?
