Announcement Thread: September 2014 COTM "Avec Eric"

Our selection for September 2014 is "Avec Eric" by Eric Ripert.

Here's a link to the voting thread: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/985935

Some information on the book & author: http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/... and some of the recipes from this book: http://www.eatyourbooks.com/library/r...

Use this thread to discuss preparations for cooking from September's book. The actual COTM threads for reporting on recipes and reviewing the book will go up 1 September 2014.

If your new to COTM or just want a refresher on books we've enjoyed in the past, this link takes you to the archive, http://www.chow.com/cookbook_of_the_m...

  1. Thank you Qianning ! Can't wait to start.

    1. q. Great job on your first month! Thanks for your efforts.

        1. Thanks all.

Meanwhile, a housekeeping question. I'm just wondering, given the new site formatting (i.e. "sticky threads" hidden), and that we've been using the recommend/hearts for vote counting for a while, do we think that a separate announcement thread is still useful? I'm happy to do it, but was thinking it might be even better to just close the voting, and ask the moderators to change the voting thread title, and use that for "announcement". Again, I'm happy to continue with the current system, just wondering if the info is starting to get too diffuse. Thoughts?

The announcement thread has often been a great place to build excitement for the actual cooking... where to find the book, ingredients, discussion about layout and font. Avec Eric is probably not a book that needs the first two, but it might want the last two.

Over the years, I have learned quite a bit from the announcement threads. I also have recollections that the announcement thread often turned into a place where we could encourage and welcome new COTMers. That having been said, if you think that it is redundant then drop it. You are the COTM-diety for 6 months!

What a hoot, no-Augustan impulses here. I think I'll continue with announcement threads.

                1. re: qianning

I liked it when the start of the month links were incorporated with the announcement threads. This way, the build up excitement stays in one place and more importantly, when people post links to the on line recipes, they are found in one place. At least one coordinator just added an addendum to the bottom of the announcement to show the live links to the new COTM.

I wish I could give more details but it's been so long since I've cooked from one of the newer COTM books. Although, I have been checking the books out from the library. Just not opening the books or keeping up with the threads.

Thanks to all past, current and future coordinators.

                2. re: smtucker

Especially when we have books with hard to find ingredients, or when there seems to be more need for useful tips on substitutions or things like that, the announcement thread is very useful.

              2. smtucker,
"...often been a great place to build excitement for the actual cooking..."
Do you mean a place to hang out during the tedious two weeks when the current book fades from our fickle minds, forgotten because a shiny new toy is in sight?

                1. Great job, qianning. I am not sure if I can justify getting this cookbook right now but I will find recipes online and participate that way.Perhaps watching the show on Amazon Prime will give me some recipes to work with?

The show is on Amazon Prime? Great to know....I have that and have never watched anything. Time to put it to use.

Yes! It looks like all the episodes are available.

Good to know, pistachio peas; I also have Amazon Prime and have never used the show-option!

                    2. re: pistachio peas

The shows are also available for streaming (free as far as I know) via his website, here's a link to the first episode:

Just watched this, he's adorable! Sweet dogs too!
"I can't define how the light in the sky ends up in your plate..." he says as he wanders where things grow and thinks about future dishes.
I'm a lot more pragmatic but still look forward to cooking with adorable Avec! ;)

Oh gosh... look out... she's hooked! We 'll now be cooking from Avec He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

                      1. My library copy just arrived at my branch. Very curious to browse through the book (will pick it up tomorrow) since I've never even heard about Eric - imagine that! :))

                        1. Imagine my library and Broward county doesn't have 1 copy of the book.

My library didn't either. I found a used (but very very good condition) copy on Amazon for $4. It came within 2 days.

                          2. Thank you, Qianning!
Yay, just ordered. I'll be excited fro this one, because my Arizona kitchen will finally be cool enough to enjoy cooking in September, and let's face it, not much in life could not be not improved Avec Eric ;)

                            1. Folks, we are having a discussion over on the voting thread (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/985935 )about how participants would like to see the threads for "Avec
Eric" organized. If you've got ideas on this, it might be worthwhile to take a look over there and let me know your preferences.

                              1. I use Good Reads all the time- an excellent site

                                1. Just flipped through the library copy I picked up yesterday, and made note of a double handful of recipes that immediately appealed to me (and can I say, I love when cookbooks include nice cocktail recipes!).

Given how non-intuitively the book is arranged (unless you're connecting chapters to TV episodes, I guess), I was very glad to see a list of recipes at the front of each chapter, but I don't understand why they're often not listed in the order in which they appear in the chapter. Confusing.

                                  1. My book (used) book hasn't arrived yet but I did receive the dvds for Seasons 1&2 of the Avec Eric tv series yesterday and look forward to indulging in a few episodes if the rainy weather forecast proves true tomorrow!!
