The best chili cheese fries

The 1st time I tried chili cheese fries was at The Hat. This is my to go place for chili cheese fries. I know I should explore more locations and may be missing out on the BEST chili cheese fries.

  1. You should give Langer's pastrami chili cheese fries a try...

Winner. Everyone else can stop commenting, now.

I love Langer's chili cheese fries too, but I prefer the pastrami separately. But this is a great picture!

      2. I like the chili cheese fries at the various Fantastic Cafes that I've been to.

            1. Twoheys.

Not that there's anything wrong with The Hat.

Just two minor things wrong - the awful pastrami and the flavorless chili!

                1. re: foodiejb

                  Exactly!

Sometimes two wrongs do make a right.

              2. Not a fan of the brown flavorless paste they pass off as chili at The Hat. For chili cheese fries in the area, Pharos Burgers about a mile north on Atlantic is much more flavorful

                1. I love the chili cheese fries at Johnnies Pastrami on Sepulveda. First, the fries are always hot, just out of the fryer, they are crinkly cut, but not, and this is important in my book, breaded in any way. Crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Next the chili is to my taste, the perfect chili in taste and consistency. I think we all have to admit that taste is unique to each of us, but theirs to my taste, is great for this purpose. Next the grated cheese, crowned by some diced onion, all immediately served to you before it loses that just made taste. They get my vote.

Johnnie's may have my favorite chili cheese fries if they dried their dishes more thoroughly after washing. I've gotten a lot of watered-down chili there. Works well as a to-go order though.

                        hi Bruin

Sepulveda and Washington Place. Titos is there too.

                      2. Big Tomy's. Trashy and so satisfying.

                          good dogs?

                          1. re: jessejames

Big Tomy's or Fab Hot Dogs? Or something else? I actually love the dogs at Fab. Memphis Melt (not always listed on the menu but is almost always available) is my favorite. Sonora Dog also good. Also recommend Spicy Redneck, LA Street Dog, Bald Eagle, and trying the Polish Firecracker (their spicy dog, for those who like spicy). Burgers are pretty good too.

                              big tomys...sawtelle pico rt?

I like fabs ok...what's a memphis melt? you're a hot dog lover phams, ive never even heard of those other joints...gotta hit that!

my faves are carney's and oki's and...I've never been a pinks fan but tried their jalapeno chili cheese dog recently, with jalapeno in the beef hotdog itself...that really kicks ass.

                                1. re: gr8pimpin

Yes, this. The Memphis Melt at Fab has bacon, BBQ sauce, cheese sauce, and really good pickled red onions (I think with Mexican oregano). Never had anything at Big Tomy's other than chili fries and a tuna melt.

The one time I went to Pink's, in the middle of the day many years ago, there was ONE person in line ahead of me. Maybe I dreamed it?

                                  1. re: phamschottler

nah, you can find no-lines at Pink pretty often during off-peak hours.

That said, Fab's is so superior to Pink's it's non comparable.

hummm, sawtell&pico not all that far from sepulveda&washington-may have to hit Johnnie's Pastrami& Big Tomy's @ the same time

                          2. I had some truly exquisite tater tots from Fab Hot Dogs in Westwood this week. I would check them out...

Yes! FHD has great chili fries, and they're customizable too: fries or tots, beef chili or green chile, shredded cheese or cheese sauce, +/- garlic or onions... I always liked green chile cheese sauce fries and chili cheese tots. Plus, their tots always come out perfect.

                                    1. re: ns1

YES!!! Those garlic tots are unbelievably good. FHD always makes 'em perfect. They are also sickly good with chili and cheese. Damn it!! I'm hungry again!!!!!

I was at the Tampa location this weekend and Joe was there. The place was so packed people were asking to share tables. I am happy to see them doing so well.

That's good to hear - I remember at the beginning him and his wife were pretty much slaves to the place.

Hopefully they've taken a few vacations by now LOL
