Bite on one or both sides?

When you bite into something, do you always do it on the same side of your mouth? Or do you bite into--say an apple--on various sides?

I realized I only bite, and mostly chew, with the teeth on my right side.. I am wondering if this is odd or typical.

  1. Not sure - I think I've always chewed on one side, rather than beign random or rolling the food round my mouth. Little choice now - got very few teeth on one side (and precious few more on the other)

    1. I never thought about it. But I do know I eat my corn like a typewriter from left to right (starting with the large end of the corn). Funny how that goes. I'll have to check on which side I eat on!

      1. Coincidentally, Mrs. ricepad just asked me about this last night. I chew on both sides of my mouth, sometimes moving the bolus from one side to the other, and sometimes on both sides at the same time. She, OTOH, is mostly a right sided chewer.

        1. I think I chew on both sides, perhaps right side dominant...but I've got an issue with spacing between 2 molars on far back right side, it catches anything remotely stringy (seaweed salad is a killer) so I consciously push those types of items to left side for chewing.

I have the exact same problem! But not using the right side diminishes the enjoyment of my food, so I just floss a lot.

          2. You bite into an apple with the right side of your mouth? I can't picture this.

I always bite into foods with my front teeth.

Chewing is right-side dominated, but I try and spread it around.

I hardly ever bite anything with my front teeth. I only would turn the apple to the side and try to use the right side of my mouth. --I know.. odd.

I seriously have never noticed anyone bite into an apple with the left or right side!

Maybe if I had a SLICE of apple, I would bite into it with the sides. But I thought everyone bit into apples with the fronts.

Not saying you're weird, it's just never occurred to me and I've never seen it, and I'm usually quite observant.

How about when you have a burger or a slice of pizza? Do you use your "side teeth?"

I don't eat burgers, but if I had a slice of pizza, I would either cut it up or still bite into it on the right-front-ish corner of my mouth.

I find this so interesting. Do you have an aversion to using your front teeth for some reason?

I think when I was young I worried my front teeth would somehow fall-out... despite that I no longer think that, I must have continued to still chew on the right side to avoid any discomfort.

Yes, I figured it must be something like that. It just seems like the most ergonomic (?) way to bite into something... I do recall now a friend who knocked his front teeth out in high school skateboarding and even though he got implants that are very sturdy, he is totally averse to biting or even touching his front teeth now. I can understand why he'd feel that way.

I bite into an apple more to the side. I have a gap between my front two top teeth and I don't like the feeling of the apple skin there.

As far as what side I chew on, it varies depending on the state of my mouth (burns, cankers, new filling, old filling, etc).

I too bite into everything with my front teeth. Seems like others bite with their side teeth. It would never occur to me to do that.
As for chewing, I favor my right side but I do chew on my left side at times.
