A Personal Announcement

I have some exciting (for me) and terrifying (also for me) news to share with you:

I'm going to be attending law school, starting in the fall semester.

It's something I've been working toward for a couple of years now, and I'm thrilled (and terrified!) that my personal circumstances have finally worked out to make it possible. It does mean that I'm leaving my position here at Chowhound, though. My last day will be this Wednesday, August 20th.

I'll still be kicking around here in the future, mostly on the Home Cooking board, since my pending overworked, broke student status is likely to mean I'll be looking for inexpensive and easy ways to feed myself. I probably won't be reading Site Talk after Wednesday, though; I mean, I love you guys, but not that much! The rest of the team will still be monitoring Site Talk, of course, so you'll hear from DeborahL, patsully, Chow Engineering and The Chowhound Team in the future.

  1. Thank you and best of luck to you.

See you in Home Cooking after august 20

    1. Good luck & much success in your future endeavor, Jacq!

      1. Best of luck. You've done a fine job here under trying circumstances.

        1. Jacquilynne, you were so friendly and so patient when I had questions during my stint as Cookbook of the Month coordinator. I remember that, and wish you big bowlsful of success!

          1. Congratulations! And I think the job you've done here is good training for dealing with lawyers as well as herding cats.

            I sincerely appreciate the time you've spent on me :) I think I'm better...aren't I?!?!? J/K.

Looking forward to seeing you on HC. Best, Cath

            1. Thanks for all your good work. Once you pass the bar, come back and start answering questions about whether it's legal to charge for extra pickles or whatever else comes up on Not About Food.

              1. Thank you for the good work you've done here. You always sound a voice of reason and calm. Best of luck in law school!

                1. Hi, Jacq:

Congrats and thanks for all your hard work.

Dealing with the hubris of--and prima donnas at--law school should be cake after dealing with all of us.

From one lawyer to another: May you only pass one bar ever again.

                  Aloha,
                  Kaleo

                  1. Congratulations! Best wishes for your law school years and beyond.

                    1. Congrats and good luck! If you've survived *us*, you can take *anything* law school can throw at you!

Will see you on the HC board when your starting semester's dust settles.

                      1. I'll miss you. I've enjoyed your humor, your helpfulness and ability to keep cool while under fire.

Great good luck. And I'll even post some quick, healthy and cheap recipes for you on the home cooking board. (And I rarely post there so it will be my way of thanking you.)

P.S. But you'll have to promise never to heart me! :-)

                        1. Happy trails to yooooooooooooooooooooo...

                          Congrats and good luck!

                          1. Congratulations on your new life direction. Will enjoy seeing you on the Home Cooking board without a diamond. Beans and rice, and Chinese food are budget friendly options. And for company, braises are your friend.

                            Best wishes.

                            1. hmm J as a lawyer - no that's terrifying for the general public as well (smirk) happy trails and hope your time here was uhhh, fun? interesting? not boring?

                              keep passing the open windows.

                              1. Good luck! Hopefully in 3 years there will actually be some law jobs, I know the prospects have dimmed considerably now that firms can just google things instead of hiring interns or junior associates to do research.

                                1. Best of luck. If you can deal with us, you can deal in the courtroom down the road. :-)

                                  1. Best of luck..... And possibly the 'really good timing' award too.

                                    1. You are one of the good guys, Jacquilynne. Go forth and conquer!

                                      1. Congratulations and the best of luck to you, Jacq. You've had a thankless job and handled it with great grace. Looking forward to having you be one of us. Welcome.

                                        1. Congratulations, Jacqueline! You'll be missed by those of us who never get a wrist-slapping, as well as those who do.
Best wishes for your future, and I know you'll do a great job at Law school.

                                          1. In our family, whenever we need good luck, a French expression - merde puissance treize - is what we say. Mpt to you and your studies.

                                            1. How exciting for you and how distressing for us.

Thanks for your grace under pressure.

School is a blast! Aside from studying all the time, remember to eat well and have fun!

                                              1. Congratulations Jacq! I always envisioned you as a future diplomat. Practicing law seems like a great fit. Best of luck with school, the bar, and all that lies ahead of you. May you always follow your passions wherever they may take you, and when the going gets tough (and it surely will), remember the craziness of Chowhound to give yourself a good laugh :)

                                                1. Good luck Jac.

I'm sure I'll see ya around though.

                                                    1. re: cowboyardee

You'll probably need to belly up to many bars to pass the bar! Good luck to you & congratulations - you'll do great!

                                                    2. Congratulations and very best wishes! I'll miss your reasonable presence here; I don't know how you've weathered the storms so gracefully. Much admiration, and I'm certain you'll be great.

                                                        1. where you going to be attending law school ????????

                                                          1. Wow, you're actually seeking a job that is less popular than being an Internet Forum Moderator. I'm curious, however, how'd you rule out selling cars or doing collections work for a hospital system? Maybe it's just a stepping stone to the House or lobbying? Folks really love those guys.

Seriously, thanks for working with us and good luck. As someone who's viewed law school classrooms from both the podium and the back row, I'll leave you with one piece of unsolicited advice: While you'll have to think about what you're learning, you're really there to be learning to think.

                                                                  1. Good luck! I hope you're fully informed about the limited employment prospects for most law school graduates these days.

                                                                      1. re: MGZ

He's right, a law degree ain't what it used to be in terms of employment prospects. We routinely warn people against spending $$$ on cooking school when they are going to face $10 an hour wages when they get out. While its nice to be encouraging, there is also a somewhat grim reality. I have a brother who graduated from law school 3 or 4 years ago near the top of his class. He took a law-related but not litigating job right out of school, suffered through that for a few years, now is looking for a new job. It has been really frustrating for him, there is just not much out there, and a huge number of applicants for any job there is - which is the state of a plenty of other industries these days, some may bounce back with the economy, but others are simply dying out and being replaced by technology. There is no more need for dozens of law interns doing library research when you can have one with internet access. So best of luck to Jacquilynne, hopefully she will get through law school without massive student loans, and hopefully there will be some law jobs in 3 years!

                                                                        1. re: babette feasts

                                                                          http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/01/bus...

I'd be happy to discuss the big hiring drought of the early 90s or the small one that occurred along with the Dot Com burst a few years later. Westlaw and Lexis certainly changed the game, but Bill was still chasing skirts at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue when that happened. In the end, talent finds work because the work finds talent.

Nevertheless, none of it has anything to do with the point I was making - so let's return to that. To put it in quasi-legal terms, it's sometimes not a bad idea to self-impose some "time, place' and manner restrictions" on ourselves. Sorta like how a toast to the happy couple on their wedding day isn't the best time to tell the story of how the bride gave you syphilis.

                                                                            1. re: MGZ

I wanted to say thanks to everyone for your well-wishes here. It was nice to hear from everyone, even -- and possibly especially -- people that didn't always hear from me about good things. In my role, you don't always make friends, but even when I was hand-slapping and finger-wagging, I always loved that I got to work with the smart, passionate, opinionated hounds every day.

As I said before, you'll probably see me around the site board in the future, but this is me, signing off from Site Talk.

Jacquilynne and I are in love and she is leaving so we can be together!! Together we will produce many little jrvedilynne's and we will live happily ever after!!

(I couldn't let you go without at least one last completely off topic ridiculous post by myself)

Peace, I do wish you well.

Thank you for your dedication to the Chowhound community these many years. It was especially appreciated by me starting in 2006 during the transition to CNET. While we loved our new shiny clubhouse, getting used to the Chow.com overlords was not easy (and I'm sure the reverse was true too!). Knowing that you, a long time chowhound, were on board at Chow.com to help navigate the way meant a lot to folks like me who wondered how we could keep the our culture alive.

We are still here. Thank you for all you've done for us.

                                                                                              1. re: Jacquilynne

You may not have given me the shirt off your back, but you are the only CH mod who has ever let me drive their car across an international border. If there is such a thing as karma, the cosmos owes you a solid. Cheers to a new chapter for a class act!

Good luck in your new endeavours & hopefully we'll cross paths again once more here on CH when things settle down for you.
