Southside Market Lamb Ribs

I wanted to go try the lamb ribs at Southside market. I have never been there. Do they only have the ribs on the weekend? Is it a place with tables to sit down? I'm looking for details practicalities so I can plan my visit there. TIA

  1. I haven't been in years, but I imagine I went on a Saturday and almost certain had the mutton ribs as they are the most interesting item on the menu. Note it is muttton and not some delicate lamb chop--pretty gamey and greasy.

I remember ordering at a counter and a bunch of communal tables like every other joint. I don't remember the other meats too well but presumably the sausage is good being Elgin and all.

Their menu indicates the ribs are available throughout but you can call first:

    Looking forward to your report.

    1. I've been many times and I don't recall any restrictions menu wise. They run a proper restaurant with no frills. Never had an issue getting a table. I'm sure I've had the mutton there but don't recall. HOnestly ribs are not great there. They make solid sausage and brisket although if you are used to top Austin places you'll be disappointed. Kinda sad, before Austin got all this killer BBQ this was a good option for North Austin people. Now it's just a distant also-ran. Plus I've been a little more hesitant to buy their stuff since the listeria outbreak but to be fair that was on the wholesale level not at the restaurant.

yep, the beef sausage is one of my very favorites. very interested in hearing the mutton report.

      2. If you're looking for someplace closer to try lamb ribs, Sam's BBQ has them. They call them mutton but they are technically lamb. I make lamb breast a lot at home. I like curing and slow cooking them, not necessarily in the smoker. They are awesome even without smoke.

Do not expect yours to be without a *lot* of fat.
