A few things to get off my chest ...

Triscuits, Peanut Butter and Marshmallows are better than traditional S'mores.

Coffee and ice cream (either as affogato or otherwise) is underrated.

As is kimchi on hot dogs.

A little bit of mustard in corn chowder goes a long way.

Don't snicker at clams and bacon on pizza until you've tried it. Twice.

Same with a glass of single-malt scotch (neat) with a plain donut.

I feel better now.

Thank you for listening.

  1. I have never heard of Clams/Bacon on Pizza.

    That sounds very interesting.Triscuit's taste

    a little funny.

Triscuits have to be fresh, very fresh. They can go stale fairly easily, despite the preservatives used.

      1. re: Tripeler

ahem fresh out of the sealed bag.

but I too have noticed that, after a day or so, they're worse than one of those shredded wheat breakfast things. (and I'm waiting to see those in the basket on 'Chopped')

        1. re: Tripeler

It has been years since I have had a Triscuit.I am going

to see if my taste buds like them now.

          1. re: Smiley881

triscuts are my summer obsession.... triscuts baked in the oven with smokey swiss and chirizo yummmm...triscuts with cream cheese and sliced pineapple... triscutts with garlic butter hit under the broiler... triscuts with a cherry tomato and mozzarella... I told you this is SUmmer of the Triscut!

              1. re: girloftheworld

Try making nachos with them: dollop of salsa, sprinkling of black beans, handful of shredded cheese, zapped till the cheese melts... yum!

              1. re: JMF

Now thats a first.Do you think Nabisco makes the Triscuits like this on purpose? It similar to the Potato Chip company only providing a half a bag of chips.I was told by an Employee of Granny Goose that it was for weight purposes.

                1. re: Smiley881

Shredded cardboard, I mean triscuits, are always pre-staled. It's a laborious process involving soaking in stagnant pond water, and encouraging the growth of mildew. Then drying ouside on humid, cloudy, days. It improves the lack of taste.

                  1. re: JMF

Something tells me you may not be a Triscuit fan... Then again, I could be reading too much into your passing comments? '-)

Nabisco 'nilla wafers and butter, a childhood staple.

                      1. re: James Cristinian

Now nilla wafers would be a good base for a s'more type cookie--maybe with pb and banana and marshmallow.

                        1. re: chowser

Only if those marshmallows are burnt to a crisp, inside still soft and pillow like, over a wood fire.

                          1. re: James Cristinian

And only mini ones because the others would overwhelm with size.

                      2. re: Caroline1

I like triscuits as much as I like shredded wheat...

                        1. re: JMF

Shredded wheat , along with triscuits, are my go to foods. They are what I=love in breakfast cereals and crackers.

                2. re: Smiley881

Clam and bacon is one of my favorite. Clam casino is one you can get at Modern in New Haven but it adds peppers.

                    1. re: Dirtywextraolives

This New Haven Native disagrees. Modern is too inconsistent. I much prefer Sally's or Ernie's or Zuppardi's....Pepe's is for the tourists.

                3. Serious Pie in Seattle has a pizza with clams, pancetta and lemon thyme on it. A group of us went and we ordered several different pizzas and it was by far my favorite.

There is a Pizza place called Cecilie's.This place has

a variety of Pizzas. We use to go to this Restaurant in

Berkeley CA. called Giovonie's.They had this pizza called

                    the Confusion Pizza.

                  2. None for me, thanks. More for you on every count.

                    1. I have done everything on that list except for the Triscuit and the scotch with the donut. I guess it's time to go and buy a box and some peanut butter.

                      1. I'm glad to see you are having fun..."rare back and throw!" as my Dizzy Dean admiring grandmother would encourage.

                          1. I have two:

                            1) I like dipping Fritos in Nutella

and B) I like Bourbon on Vanilla ice cream.

                                  Maker's vanilla walnut banana milkshake.

                                  A long standing favorite.

There's a burger place near me that does a black and white milkshake with REALLY good local ice cream and we sometimes have them with a shot of dark rum. Really good. :)

My daughter and I bought assorted chip type snacks--pretzels, potato chips, pringles, fritos. Also assorted chocolate candies like rolos, snickers, etc. We did various toppings of chocolate on chips and baked. Our favorite was fritos and rolos. So I could see Nutella and Fritos.

                                      1. re: chowser

                                        Fritos and rolos sound good!

Here's another to try, and my daughter's favorite....dipping pork rinds in chocolate, like you would strawberries.

My mom used to fry pork cracklings and sprinkle sugar on them as a special treat. I'm not sure about the chocolate but sugar and salt on pork fat can be magical!

GOTW, your dog is very talented, eating with his/her paws and all. I must say, human Frito breath is pretty disgusting, corn nut breath is just vile and should require a jail sentence.

                                          1. re: girloftheworld

That smell does not come from Fritos!

                                            1. re: girloftheworld

I think all dogs' paws do. It has something to do with their not having sweat glands.

                                              1. re: girloftheworld

So, GOTW, you need to work with it! How would you combine "dog paw smell" with a basket of lime jello, arugula, Polish sausage, and corn bread?

Well, just kidding of course!!! You are so beyond talented, I had to throw that up to you. (Actually, if you can use these bizarre ingredients, I'll be even more amazed than I already am with your talents.)

                                                Always all the best, bc.

Holy crap, I thought I was the only person in the world that has a fritos footed dog. Wow.

                                                  1. re: alliegator

I always thought my dogs paws smelled like popcorn. So then I saw a weird fact about dogs.

The only sweat glands they have are in between their toes on their paws. That is why dogs always clean their paws. It's chemistry of their sweat glands that give the dogs that smell. Most people say, chips or popcorn.

                                                    1. re: Sandwich_Sister

                                                      Pad paws and tongue.

Dogs also sweat through their tongue.

                                                  2. re: girloftheworld

I am amazed that people actually smell their dogs' paws. I never wanted to know what my dogs had been stepping in.

                                                    1. re: ricepad

I poached a chicken yesterday. It surprised me how much it smelled like my dog when she's wet.

                                                      1. re: ricepad

Depends on the dog I suppose.

I have 2 dogs an 8 pound Miniature Pinshcer and a 6 pound rescue who is part Dachshund part Miniature Pinscher.

Dogs of this size clean themselves plus they have very lights coats. They clean themselves like cats and if you sleep with your dogs in bed like I do you are bound to wake up with a paw in your face which is better than other alternatives lol.

It's not that we go out of our ways to sniff the paws of our dogs, it just happens.

But if you look it up, it's a real thing. I think the sweat glands are salty and that's why when we happen to smell them they smell likes chips, fritos and popcorn.

There are worse dog smells out there. ;P

I've seen enough paw prints in the dog turds in the yard to keep me from smelling said paws!

                                                          1. re: ricepad

Hahaha like I said depends on the dog. While Miniature Pinschers are very sturdy square dogs they are very cognizant about things like that. They will hop, work their way around that. They never track in dirt, or mud into the house

Mine don't exhibit a lot of dog behavior other than my rescue dog killing, eating and rolling around in a Florida lizard carcass every so often.

As for affogato, it' easiest to just slip a scoop of Ben & Jerry's Cookie Dough ice cream into a mug before filling with heavy crema espresso! Or if it's eventide, a scoop of pistachio gelatto with dash of Pernod and topped by a shot of espresso do will do nicely.

Sure, with a cake doughnut, that sounds doable, but a raised glazed? Not my cuppa tea, or Scotch in this instance. Sweets and Scotch for my high tea thanks.

                                                                                                        1. A crisp fall morning, a flask of scotch, a box of cake doughnuts from Muellers, gathered with friends before a game or "The Hunt". Fond memories (though, upon reflection, I'm quite sure I miss our youth much more than the brash pretentiousness that so often accompanied it).

Whiskey, in general, and donuts are delightful together - and, more importantly, not just for breakfast anymore. Personally, I've come to the conclusion that the crispy, twisted, oblong crullers are the best - I've graduated to dunking.

                                                                                                          * * *

A neat glass of scotch and ice cream also works for me. My favorite, however, is the beer float - a pint of IPA topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

                                                                                                          1. DH says skip the donut and pass him some chicken 65 or chongquing chicken with that scotch.

Iced Coffee is/was always made with vanilla ice cream, not half and half. Coffee ice cream is often added to a cup of hot coffee. These are the only 2 good food habits i learned from her.

I still can't get anyone to try a PB&J with their chili, but I'll just keep sowing that seed until I get a taker.

                                                                                                                            1. re: Joebob

                                                                                                                          1. The triscuit thing sounds like it might be winner. Similar to a peanut butter fluff sandwich.

Yes to coffee and ice cream.

Kimchi on anything is winner at my house.

No to corn chowder ...mustard or no.... Ick, too much like canned cream corn circa 1967 for my sense memory.

No seafood on pizza, no amount of trying will help me there.

I prefer to skip the donut, add a sugar cube to the whiskey, a few drops of bitters, toss in a single crescent shaped ice cube, swirl.... and sip my dessert :)

                                                                                                                            1. You finally got around to a bacon clam pie, huh? Good job, ipse.

                                                                                                                                Toasted marshmallows?

Three, four, five, I'm on board.

                                                                                                                                              1. Everything sounds pretty tasty to me except (1) the Triscuits & PB & M. My preference is for Trader Joe's "Woven Wheat Wafers". They taste for all the world like the Nabisco stuff. Not very consistent in shape but that doesn't bother me. (2) No on the hot dogs [I don't eat them], but kimchee on Anything else - yes. On the list, though, my favorite is the Affogato.

                                                                                                                                                1. I had a grilled pizza once, that used white clam pasta sauce as the sauce, grilled sauteed ham bits and grilled corn and grilled pepper. It was pretty good, but the ham steak didn't really need to be grilled, it made the ham bits too dry. Too much grilling, I think. ;)

I was out of fruit, my raspberry jam jar was stuck shut, so, motivated by hunger, I added a dollop of TJ's Belgian chocolate pudding to my yogurt. It's good. Don't tell anyone. I may market this.

A really excellent yeasty crust cheese pizza with anchovies and a mug of really good dark beer or stout is what good eating is all about!!! If it wasn't for the headache thing, I'd give beer and chocolate a try.

                                                                                                                                                          2. I'm not a fan of triscuits i'd opt for wheat thins

I'll feel so much better after saying this: Stop putting mustard powder in mac n cheese. It does not improve it, it just makes it taste like crappy mustard powder!

I've never heard of s'mores without chocolate. Is that even legal? :) Also, fun fact: National S'mores Day was on August 10th. Thanks Wikipedia, and yes, I have a lot of time of my hands today waiting on some roofers.
