Yesterday, we had a "Share" button, Today?

  • 9

We've got four to make the ability to share obvious, I guess; if you're going to go that way, we should have five. Where is the Link button for the OP that was part of the Share button just yesterday? I just got through telling someone on a Site Talk thread yesterday that the share button was the Permalink for the OP; now, I'm a liar. Yes, I know I can tap on the Location bar and get the link that way; that's not intuitive for the non-techie.

Yes, I see we have an email option. But what if I don't want to use a Chow e-mail function? I just want to grab the link and paste it into my iPad email, or if on my PC, Thunderbird. Or, as many do here on Chowhound, I want to paste a Permalink to the OP into my response in a new thread, referring to it to answer a question. C'mon. This is not an improvement.

  1. Do you mean the link like this which I copied off the browser top window?

Yep. Exactly. See the last sentence in my first paragraph. Yesterday, the ability to grab that link was part of the share button. Today, it's gone.

    2. We decided to break out the individual share actions into touchable buttons specifically because of the difficulty of relying on pop ups for the iPad.

In the process, we removed the link icon because the ability to copy the URL from the address bar at the top of the browser is well known. Duplicating that action on the page seems unnecessary, and takes up more space.

We'll consider this further if more feedback comes in on the subject, but hopefully there won't be any confusion.

On the plus side, I also noticed the "following" button is a little smaller, which is nice.

So wait, now that permalink is gone, how exactly do I link to a specific post within a thread?

I've tried linking to a specific reply several times over the last couple of weeks, and got totally frustrated that the link icon was gone. I still have not been able to figure out where to grab the permalink from.

Click on the time stamp for the post. On your post, right under your name is '2 minutes ago', with the associated link: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/9858...

Ahh, thanks paulj. That was not obvious.

Why would Chowhound not implement a 2 week window where, for example, clicking on permalink would have brought up a dialogue explaining this? It would have done wonders to ease the transition.

IIRC, this has been around for at least a month and also IIRC it was thought to be "intuitive." Like everybody knows this. Uh, no.

I get it now. This is why they thought it was intuitive:

                  http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/9838...

"It has been the web standard for several years in social media, blogs, commenting systems, to name a few examples."

I am vehemently anti-social media, so every time Chowhound copies an idea established by Facebook (like the drawer icon on the mobile site, for example), it confuses the hell out of me for a while.

I'd expect Yelpers to be able to intuitively follow these kinds of "social media standards", but Chowhounds are a different demographic.

Engineering, please take this into account when implementing social media "user interface standards" in the future.

For those of us whose only "social media" is Chowhound, they're not as intuitive as you may think.

                  Thank you.
