Discussion Matawan Cafe, a.k.a. Chopped Salad Shoppe, a.k.a., Philly Cheesesteaks, a.k.a. 18 Burgers, a.k.a. Farmer's Market, a.k.a. ...

Yep, there's activity at the "Revolving Door Restaurant and Market" on the corner of Route 79 and Route 516 in Matawan. No sign as to what's coming, but I think the "For Lease" sign is gone. (It's hard to tell, with the big dumpster blocking the view....)

Stay tuned for the next exciting chapter!

  1. I have to go that way later this week, so will check it out. I'm also trying to figure out what's going where the Office used to be on 35/36. Brand spankin' new building going up in that location & it's almost done.

Heard the old Office is to become a Dunkin Donuts.

Wow someone hit the DD lottery if they got that location. The traffic count there is off the charts with the parkway right there and access from both sides of the high way.

        1. re: jrvedivici

Yeah seriously. The one on 36 in hazlet backs up all the way down the road in the morning.

Whats going in that old Bradlees parking lot? And directly across is that closed shop rite too.

          1. re: corvette johnny

The new one will have a drive thru as well, or so I've been told. I'm sure it will kill off the one about a 1/2 mile south of that location. It is also going to be a morning rush hour PITA, with people pulling out of the lot & having to get in the left lane to get on the GSP.

The only thing I've heard about Bradlees, was that the Foodtown part of the building was condemned, and had to be torn down. Although I'm not sure if that is correct, as I can't even remember where I heard it. Shop-Rite just moved, I don't think anything is going on in the rt. 36 location.

            1. re: drubenero

Drive-thru seems to be the new DD model--they took over another "revolving store" location on Route 516 across from Browntown Shopping Center and made it into a drive-thru (and non- as well). It's just east of a DD store in a strip mall, which I presume will close.

      1. re: coldsolderjoint

Could be. Though I don't know why they'd keep flogging the same location with the same kind of menu offerings.. i.e., my original post.. doesn't make sense to me. I only saw that ad once, back in December of last year.. but the website is still up.

        1. re: MarlboroMan

before Paco's closed, they where trying to sell Portuguese food next to the tacos...

      2. They seem to be gutting the inside *and* putting new siding, etc., on the outside, so it could end up being anything.

        I'm rooting for:
        - an Ethiopian restaurant
        - a kebab shack
        - a good barbecue place
        - a restaurant for a cuisine that is not even occurring to me
        - a really good used book store

Now they are adding a turret in the corner. The silhouette looks a lot like a KFC, making me wonder if the Route 34 KFC is moving there. In any case, changing the silhouette seems to imply a chain/franchise eatery rather than a one-off.

            1. re: MarlboroMan

Probably not--the turret is pointy, not flat on top.

              (Jeez, I can't believe we're reduced to analyzing architecture here! :-) )

              1. re: eleeper

Drove past there a little while ago, definitely looks more KFC than White Castle. May not be either cause I don't see where they'd put a drive through.

Also drove past the old Office on 35/36. Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robbins truck was in the lot making a delivery.

Mystery solved: (but you're not gonna like it)

                  Pizzeria (via signage on door)

                  Checked this out last night.

So much for "KFC turrets." :)

Unless it's one of those "Fried Chicken and pizza" joints.. THAT would be cool.

                  1. re: MarlboroMan

Yeah, I can understand how people might find Angelo's (less than 500 feet), Esposito's (0.3 miles), and Scotto's (0.4 miles) too far away and so go to this one instead. :-(

(One is reminded of the old Onion story "New Starbucks Opens In Rest Room Of Existing Starbucks", or the scene in SHREK where the crowd rushes out of one "Farbucks" into another one right across the street...)

Yep, 25 Burgers is still just down the road. We don't go there, because 1) it's incredibly unhealthy, and 2) I find the whole "sloppy burger" thing a big disgusting. (I'm not saying the place isn't clean or anything like that, but I like food I'm supposed to eat with my hands a bit neater than their burgers.)

                    1. re: MarlboroMan

Passed by today--now there's a sign saying "Coming Soon -- La Madona Italian Cuisine". [sic]

Maybe that's a good sign--the sign for Shanghai Bun on the street display pillar is spelled "Shanghia Bun".

Or maybe it's not a good sign....

                      1. re: eleeper

Finally, an Italian restaurant in New Jersey!! I can't wait!

          1. Ate dinner from here (La Madonna) the other night. It was packed. I called in an hour before I came in and still had to wait at least another 20 mins. They were busy and I wasn't bothered that much by it.

Nothing special here. The meatballs were decent. I think they had some sausage in them. Everything else was ordinary.

Why do people keep opening up places like this? NJ has enough itallian joints! Especially in this areea. Denino's and Ciro's are among the best pizza we've ever had and they are both 5 minutes away. Why try to compete with that. Around the corner, Esposito's hot sandwhiches are amazing. They make the perfect cheesesteak with brick oven baked bread. I usually find myself eating the leftover bread from the ends of the sandwhich. The owner seemed nice and humble but this place won't last.

Why can't anyone open up a good bar with fresh food and a small local beer list to compete with Maloney's (Home of the $10 Pint)??!!
