The WeekEnd WindDown: Celestino Pasadena, Cana Rum Bar, Faith & Flower, Peru's Taste

What did you eat and drink this weekend?

I got no pictures or time for long reviews but I had a great weekend of eats to share. Here's what went down the hatch.

Friday: Celestino Pasadena big party room (pre Eminem/Rhianna at Rose Bowl). Quite good for a party of 25 or so. Excellent liguine vongole and squid ink risotto.

Sat: Cana Rum Bar - fantastic cocktails. F&F - yummy steelhead trout, crab toast and oxtail angelotti

Sun: Peru's Taste - OMG!!!!!!!! PT is probably my top restaurant in LA now. They get it all right every time. Excellent seafood and meats. We went all seafood this time but were longing for the beef hearts we had last time (but had no room for this time). Tiradito, Leche di Tigre, Tacu-Tacu a lo mocho, Parihuela and Yucca Frita. Perfection.

Despite the name Cana does not actually have a vast selection of rums...if that's what you want La Descarga has a whole lot more rums (or did 4 yrs ago when I last went). But the cocktail making of all stripes and spirits was the standout at Cana. Excellent Mai tai, Brazilian Neck Tai and Rum and coconut

thanks -- it'd be nice to find a bar with a chill atmosphere and good mixology that close to staples.

the rum and coconut water at cana is outstanding

Caveat: I have friends that work at both Caña and La Descarga. I agree that Caña doesn't have a VAST selection of rums, but it still has a much much much larger selection of rums than any bar other than La Descarga.

I'm a big fan of Faith & Flower too.

Thanks SS--guessing Havana Club (my favorite brand) unavailable?

                1. re: jessejames

Funny enough, I just got back from Cuba and I, of course, drank plenty of Havana Club, but my favorite Cuban rum is Santiago. And no, there are no Cuban rums for sale at any bar in LA.

My favorite rums are Smith & Cross and Appleton (both Jamaican), El Dorado (Guyana), Rhum Clement and Rhum JM (Martinique) and I'm a big fan of the Plantation line of rums (various locales). Both Caña and La Descarga have these in stock, but so will most other craft cocktail establishments. The point of going to Caña and La Descarga is that they'll have off-the-beaten-track bottles that may not be your favorite but will be interesting nonetheless.

                    Nice tips. Thanks

That middle color HC rum was made to go with coke if you ask me.

I'll try some of those others.

Had some good ones recently in Guatemala but was so surprised by how good this koloa rum from kauaii is and u can get it in la now.

                    I look forward to Cana.

          2. I found a "Peru's Taste," in Northridge on yelp. Is that the one?
