Please ID this melon

  • 4

Bought this melon at a farmers market. The vendor said it was a "lantern melon", or at least that's what it sounded like he said. Looked up "lantern melon" and didn't find anything. He also said it has a distinct smell and flavor (somewhat spicy). It didn't smell until I washed it, at which point it smelled like rotten fruit, but when I cut into it, it wasn't rotten and didn't smell. It tastes somewhat like sweet honeydew, not spicy at all, IMO.

Can someone tell me what this name of this melon is?

Thanks.

  1. Doing a quick search, it looks like it could be a Christmas melon.

Yup, aka Santa Claus melon (not kidding!)

    2. Thank you, sandylc, and pinehurst. It does indeed look like it is a Santa Melon.

      1. Went back to the farmers mkt. and bought another melon. Asked the farmer who grew it what it's called. Again, he replied, "lantern melon". I asked if that was the same as a "Santa melon". He answered that he'd never heard of a Santa melon. Oh, well.
