Best place to buy cheap bulk staples? (e.g. dried beans)

I go through a lot of dried beans.

I'm basically price-shopping against my local Fine Fare.

I'd love to buy local-farm dried beans from Cayuga (NYC Greenmarkets), etc, but it's not in the budget.

My Haitian housemate, for example, goes to a little shop up on 181st and broadway. Buys the pintos I get for 1.39/lb for .89.

I'm expecting the best sources to be in "ethnic" neighborhoods.

Any advice?

  1. Outer boroughs will likely be the best resource, did you already post there?
Or just go shopping with your housemate....

My recollection is that Costco has a very limited variety of beans; canned and dry.
