Can I substitute black sesame seeds for white in a spicy noodle recipe?
Absolutely. I only use black sesame seeds in certain recipes. There's no difference in taste, only in appearance.
Thanks. They sure look pretty in my Asian noodles too!
No, they taste different.
Black sesame seeds have a slight bitter taste, and work better in savory dishes. White sesame seeds have an earthy, nutty taste and are better suited for sweeter recipes such as cakes and pastries (though not exclusively).
