Casual Dining Recommendations

  • 4

Can anyone suggest some good casual dining options in Manhattan? Looking for places that have good food and that we can just stop in along our travels touring the city without having to dress up or make reservations ahead of time. Simple food done well is preferred to more upscale/complex dishes.

Specific neighbourhoods I'm interested in are the Union Square area, Midtown West (btwn W 49 St & W 59 St), Bryant Park area, West Village/Greenwich Village.

Thank you for any recommendations you can give.

Are you willing to wait for a table?

Breakfast, lunch, or dinner? What about a food hall like Eataly, Hudson Eats, Gotham West Markey?

Weekday or weekend? Some places that are quiet for weekday lunch won't be on the weekends, for example. Mon-Weds is usually slower for dinner as well.

Are you looking for quick service / counter service or table service?

What's your budget per person before tax, tip, alcohol?

If simplicity is what you are after, fewer places in NYC offer simpler or more delicious food than Pearl Oyster Bar on Cornelia St., and they take no reservations, anyway.

Louro on West 10th is delicious but more adventurous. Upscale food in a very informal, relaxed atmosphere.

Mainly looking for dinner recommendations. Only looking for food, but not opposed to eating at pubs or bars if they are low key. Ideal budget would be $20 or less per entree/person, but would go up to $40 per person if the place was really good.
