Would you like a CH app?

It is strange to me that there is no CH app.
I know some people object, but since I use my phone almost exclusively I sure would like it. (Even though I am old:))
Your thoughts?

  1. No. I use an iPad and always prefer a normal browser view to a special app. The problem with apps is that the view cannot be expanded.

    1. I'm a no also. I prefer using websites to apps when possible. I also assume if there was an app, every time I visit the site I'll get the "download our app!" pop up. No thanks!

        1. I'd love it. As it stands, I rarely use my phone because the site is unwieldy on it.

          1. I'm a no also, but I have a question for my fellow no's, well I guess anyone can answer.

I use my phone often and I do have problems navigating certain aspects of the site on my phone, but I realize I have fat thumbs so it's more a "me than them" issue.

But if Chow was to come out with an app that wouldn't preclude us from still using it via our mobile browser correct? I know facebook has an app, but I don't use it because my phone blew up with every notification, message, update etc. that went on with the site. I find using my browser to check facebook and retrieve my messages and updates rather than having them automatically sent to my phone to be more my preference. So wouldn't that be the same if Chow came out with an app, it would be the users discretion to us the app or not?

If my assumption is true, that it's users discretion to use the App, then I'll change my vote to YES! (I just won't use it)

Yes, you can use whichever you want on a phone.
I just find that in general apps run better on the phone which is why I like them.

Jr. - I think what you really need to do first is perform an "exclusionary" test with your phone and the CH site. This will require A. Your Phone and B. A Separate Keyboard compatible with your phone.

At this point you will go onto the site using your phone, but you will have "excluded" your fat thumbs from the equation. If the site sill performs "wonkily" (tech talk) then I think you might be changing your vote to a "yes" from a "no" post "fat thumbs exclusion" test.

There are a few sites which disallow a normal browser view from an IOS device. This site works well on IOS as is, so I don't have any need for an app.

And I really, really hate that! Especially as my PC is currently sidelined.

                    1. Thanks guys! We certainly hope to build an app down the line, so you're not alone. And to answer the concerns mentioned, an app might be focused on a particular feature or set of features, but it wouldn't replace the mobile site.

In the short term, we're focused on improving the mobile site as traffic to it is growing very quickly and many pages are in need of a more mobile-centric design (with faster page load times). We'll keep you posted on both as we have more to announce.

Can you connect the forum via Tapatalk? There's got to be a better way than this. Web browser use on a phone is prehistoric. It's disappointing that this has been discussed since 2012 - at least that I've read - and an app still doesn't exist...

We won't be able to connect Chowhound to any third party services, but we'll make sure to keep your app preference in mind as we plan things going forward.

Do check out the mobile site again if you haven't in a while. We're in the middle of making a number of improvements there over the next few months.

I'm on it right now and it's really not an easy navigation. Too bad you can't connect to Tapatalk but please reconsider the original app idea.
