August 2014 Farmers' Markets, Farm Stands, CSA updates

Things are really perking at the markets. I'm overdosing on blueberries, heirloom tomatoes, and cantaloupe, and itching to explore more markets.

What are you buying and what's your current local obsession?

  1. My tomatoes are on fire so my focus at the markets has been fruits. Blueberries and melons like you mentioned as well as peaches. Local corn is slowly starting to trickle into to my famers market. Lots of good greens too. Oh and golden beets! Cant get enough of those!

Please post any sighting of local saturn peaches. We buy those pounds at a time and live on them while they last.

Will do! Haven't seen those yet…

I asked about the saturn peaches at Foppema's Farm on Tuesday and he said about two weeks.

Verrill Farm in Concord had these on Saturday - very good. They had a sign saying where they came from -- another farm, not Verrill itself. Maybe Stoneham? Or another 'St-' town?

And today, at least one if not more of the stands at the Copley Square farmer's market has them.

I got a big bag at Foppama's farm stand at Copley and was coming over here to let you all know they have arrived! Thanks Fleenshop!

They had a lot of them at Volante Farm in Needham

Farmer Al has them at the Davis Market today, along with buckets of blueberries & beautiful onions (red & white).

The Hmong farmers have an abundance of zucchini blossoms!

          4. really nice purple kale, musk melon, and ground (husk) cherries from Red Fire Farm at Dewey Square yesterday - a few heirloom tomatoes, corn, and pattypan squash to be tried tonight...

            1. For the last few weeks we've been getting wonderful kousa quash, eggplant, purple bell peppers, tomatoes, Romano beans, broccoli rabe, corn, and peaches from Dick's Market Farm. Connors has had fab corn too, plus their own peaches and nectarines, radishes, cabbages. Everything is coming in with gusto and all has been exceptionally delicious.

              1. I got an e-mail that East St. Farmstand in Tewksbury is sampling their melon varieties on Saturday from 10-3.

                1. Ground berries from Allandale Farm today. We'd never had them before, so they were a treat.
