Hard Hat XII

Other one was getting cumbersome.

Two things I saw today:

1. Looks like Suzi's on Anderson will be no more. It now says it's a sleep experts on the building, but the "coming soon" on the sign is still there.

2. New place opened between Noble and Pinthouse called Fork and Taco. Haven't tried it yet, though.

  1. johnny t's bbq in RR is moving to pflugerville due to "re-purposing" of the space :-( he has the best green beans i've ever had, but i'm never over in PF.

    1. Oh, Fork & Taco opened? Funny, I was at Noble on Saturday and saw the space but had eyes only for Noble.

      1. The Mexican Cookware post reminded me to look up the cookware store I keep seeing on South First Street. Turns out they just grand opened today.

sqwertz, if you haven't been to Lenoir, you must remedy that, pronto. It's excellent.

I don't dine out nearly as much as the rest of you. I've got a pretty long list of places I *should* try.

            1. re: sqwertz

I'm sure you're much the healthier for it, sqwertz.

              1. re: sqwertz

I've seen a lot of the pictures of meals you've cooked sqwertz. With that quality and variety coming out of your home kitchen, you're not missing anything by eating in.

                  1. re: dinaofdoom

How are you guys all seeing sqwertz's cooking? Does he write a blog?!?

                        1. re: dinaofdoom

Must keep an eye out for those...Chowhound party at sqwertz's house?

I'm not into wordy blogs. I just post pictures to a flickr account:

                        https://www.flickr.com/photos/sqwertz/

But I do describe a lot of the things I make in the Facebook Cooking Group:

Darn. Can I adopt you for twice monthly meals? hehehe.

if not, a CSA or something, perhaps?

                                    1. re: amysuehere

like a share & pickup service. i've been seeing "CSA" type services now for all sorts of things that aren't produce.

                                      1. re: dinaofdoom

That sounds fun. Would be a nice compromise when I want to go out and hubby wants to stay in.

                                        1. re: amysuehere

shares seem to be gaining momentum, too. so far i've seen cheese, jam, dessert, bread and meat shares.

sqwertz, take note if you are in an enterprising mood! :-D

                    1. Just talked to publicist of Fork & Taco. Sign up. Restaurant won't open till middle of month.

                      1. I think they are leasing part of the building to a Sleep Experts store, but are still on track to reopen. A post on their FB page from late July says they "can't wait until they reopen" (https://www.facebook.com/SuzisChinaGrill).

                        1. Dang Banh Mi opened. It was terrible when i went and nothing really remotely authentic based on my knowledge of banh mi.

Slab BBQ has a now open sign. haven't been by yet.

We too were disappointed in Dang. Weird. The papaya salad had this overpowering fishy taste.

Now Slab on the other hand, rocks. Great pulled pork and great sauces. Nice buns. Pies from Cutie Pies. Saw some pork ribs that looked good too. Going back.

i really liked the soft opening, and such nice people for putting on a great spread. the white sauce is gooooood.

                              1. re: BTAustin

thrilled to hear about slab. pulled pork is surprisingly lacking in the bbq scene here.

Went again today. This is the "donk" sandwich:

                                  http://www.realdopebbq.com/slab_menu.pdf

It was really good. Had some pork ribs too and they were Memphis worthy.

Went today for lunch as well. Probably 40 folks there, and not a single female customer. The 1/2 lb pork ribs (aka four ribs) were good almost great. Mine weren't Memphis worthy, but probably the best I've had in Austin and possibly Texas (been too long since I've been to Country Tavern in Kilgore for a good memory comparison). I sampled a friend's pulled pork and it was tasty at least for my bite. I went back for a second order and got the brisket with queso sandwich and was impressed by the brisket (and the queso certainly helped) though the jalepeno bread tasted a slightly stale and broadly was too bready.

I'll go back for the ribs and brisket and will keep trying bites of the pulled pork.

Is Dang really that bad? I haven't been yet, but they supposedly got their recipes from some Vietnamese lady in Vietnam. BTAustin, isn't a green papaya salad supposed to be ensconced in fish sauce? I think so. Gots to be all fishy.

                                  1. re: rudeboy

I didn't find Dang to be bad but I wouldn't take it over Baguette house or Tam Deli either.

                                    1. re: rudeboy

Rudeboy: I'm no expert but it tasted like carp or something. Don't know what it's usually like but my officemate that has eaten lots of them, some in SE Asia, thought it was weird. None of us could eat it. The bahn mi was too complicated. I guess I did like it. The egg one I think I would like alot. But for 8.00 I'm over at Tam Deli or Baguette house getting something more uh normal. And anybody that doesn't know what one is really needs to go try those first. Seemed like the pho was expensive too. Nice people....

                                      1. re: BTAustin

That's what I expected - but when I checked into it it sounded like they are trying for something very traditional. Wonder what kind of fish sauce are they using on the som tam salad. I'll ask before I order it.

                                3. Original plan for Suzi's was for the new structure to be mixed use. Suspect that Suzi's will reopen in part of the building. If the food makes you sick or you overeat, you just go next door and take a nap

Suzi's is way too saucy sweet. I don't understand the allure. But I expect that they will do a fine business.

                                  2. Just a general comment/question about these Hard Hat threads... if something is under construction and/or opening soon, it seems like this is the right thread for that. If it's something that's already open and you've eaten there, why not start a separate thread about it? Just wondering if we can keep these from getting to 200 replies so fast.

Not a bad idea, jwynn. It might be impossible to control, however. Maybe we need to just start more hardhats.

                                    2. Peached Tortilla is taking a while at 5000 or so Burnet Rd. I did see a small, oldish looking sign added that said "Tortilla Flats." Seems like I've seen that sign somewhere else before. I know that Ruby's BBQ still has an old sign that says "Fajita Flats," but I've seen the other sign specifically before.

tortilla flats is new owners with an old name. they are repurposing the name for some sort of high end taco bar. I think Eater had something about it a while back.

the original was on lamar near guadalupe. It was a dive even for the 70's. used to have taco eating contests. I believe Eddie Wilson won the first one.

                                      2. vegetarian indian joint going in at the old rome pizza spot on parmer/620. can't remember the name of it, but it has a green sign with what looks like a banana leaf.

                                        1. some sort of small restaurant/catering company or something coming at the site of an old catering company at richcreek and burnet. mixed bev license notice in the window.

a "chocolate factory" in the same shopping center is hiring as well. maybe i'll apply.

                                            2. Suzi's has moved to the side of the building and looks like it is opening soon. The same doors are up, just Suite C instead of Suite A.

                                              1. There is what appears to be some sort of Asian supermarket being built out a few doors down from Muang Thai at 183 and Lakeline Mall Drive. They have the name of the place up, and it looked Filipino?
