Great Find: Mara's Continental Cuisine South Amboy

I've driven by here a few times and was curious to try it. The food was wonderful!!

As always, a test of a good restaurant to me is their bread. Mara's served excellent bread with herb butter. They even brought out the end pieces at my request!!

A special appetizer of cockles in a red wine broth was amazing, as were their fried artichokes- reminded me of Rome!!

One main was a crispy, (yes it was), half chicken which was accompanied by a mushroom risotto and veggies of the day. Chicken was perfect- soft and juicy inside with excellent crispy skin. The risotto was freshly made and perfect as were the vegetables. The other main was this gigantic pork chop cooked perfectly to medium, topped with sautéed mushrooms. Also on the plate were those vegetables, as well as two potato croquettes which were out of this world!!

The portions were huge, the food was delicious, and the service by Courtney was perfect. This restaurant needs to gain a following and I urge you to get there soon and try Chef Steinberg's cooking- It was a great surprise. Looking forward to coming back and trying more of the menu!!

Better get there soon. http://www.loopnet.com/Listing/188183.... That's a very unlucky spot. It was originally Martini's, then they expanded & nothing's been able to stick there since.

Just think- Fernandes 3 is right down the road and seems very successful. No reason this place, if people try it can't be as well- The food is really good!!

I live near both & BF & I both like Fernandes. We've tried every incarnation of what is currently Mara's & haven't had much luck at any of them. Maybe I'll check it out one evening for a drink before suggesting giving it another shot for dinner.

Uh oh! But thanks for the real estate tip!

You're correct on that comment/prediction Jerzeegirl. My brother lives up there and has dined there. He says it's amazing that they're still even open - rarely a crowd let alone having an issue getting a table. He really likes the chef and the food - that location is just plain terrible; on a terrible stretch of forgotten highway.

          1. Hmm, maybe I'll take a drive up 35

            How was the wine list?

The wine list wasn't great. This said, I'll be the has a reasonable corkage fee.

            2. Sockster,

I'm so glad you enjoyed it as well.

              1. fwiw, my brother commented that there's an Auction sign in front of the building, scheduled for 9/15.
