ACK black widows in my garden

My husband was working in the garden today and found 3 black widows living under my zucchini plants. This is just creeping me out considering I'm out there on a regular basis picking fruits under and around those huge leaves. I hope they aren't also hiding under my yellow wax beans which are really dense and bushy.

I've never seen them in our veggie gardens anywhere we've lived. We did have some in the garage and in the shed out back at this house but I never thought they'd move to the garden.

I guess I will go ahead and wear gloves when picking fruits.

  1. They're in my garden, too. Several were out in the Iris and sedum bed out by the street where it's sunny and hot. DH found a few in his vegetables.
It's their turf, so I just leave 'em alone.

Well he "took them out". Hopefully the area won't get repopulated.

    2. Yikes! I think we only have one poisonous spider here in my area of NJ, the Brown Recluse. AFAIK, I have never seen one in 46 years. I don't know how others do it, with scorpions and such. Nooo thank you.

We have the brown recluse also; I haven't had a problem with them in all the years I've lived here but I know people that experienced some damage when they got bit. Now, I've been thinking of moving to Phoenix; my daughter lives there and she told me not to even think about putting in a garden if I move there because of the scorpions. They freak me out!

I lived in the both the Mohave and Sonoran deserts and had gardens. Never saw a scorpion in it though. We did have lots of gecko's

I hear a lot of people who have spent their whole lives in Arizona say they have never encountered a scorpion. Yet, my daughter, who has lived there for the past six years has been stung a few times after finding them in her house. I guess you just never know but I don't think I would let it keep me from gardening..

I've lived in the Sonoran desert since I was 6. The only wild scorpion I ever saw was on the ceiling right over my bunk when I was at camp. My coworker, who doesn't live that far from me, has loads of scorpions in his yard. ut then I never took a black light out to look for them.

        2. Rasputina or kitchengarden gal, What area do you live in? I'm in CT and hope there are none in my gardens to encounter unexpectedly.

I'm in West Georgia, but they are all over the country. I'm in the garden all the time with all the critters that live there.

I don't like ticks, and I don't like horseflies, but spiders, no problem. They have no interest in coming near me. And they eat insects that may not be beneficial in my garden.

Thanks, never heard of them in vegetable gardens before!

            2. I get them all the time in my chile plants. They like to pull the leaves together to make little nests. Just have to be careful when harvesting.

If I notice them, I'll give the nests a good blast with the hose.
