Good Westernized Chinese Takeout [split thread]

(Note: this discussion was split from a conversation about westernized Chinese buffets at: -- The Chowhound Team)

Me too! Not at all what the OP was looking for but my favourite delivery/take-away place for westernized Chinese food is the New Sun Restaurant at 2925 Cambie St (Vancouver, not Richmond).

  1. I always wonder about New Sun. Pretty tasty, is it?

New Sun is a hole-in-wall. Dirty room and space. Take-outs and deliveries are quite Westernized but MSG-laden and overly-greasy. I'm in the 'hood so that comes from experience.

LR, where do you go for take-out or delivery Chinese on the west side? I used to order from Win's all the time but they're closed. :(

        1. re: Hachidori

I kind of straddle West & East side, as I'm in Cambie Village.

I don't do Chinese take-out often, but when I do it'd be either Congee Noodle House or Kwong Chow Congee & Noodle House (Main btwn 15 & 16th) I like Kwong Chow in that most of their dishes come in either half (~ $8) or full size (~ $12) and that's good to mix & match portions depending on what the dishes are:

          Hope that helps :-)

          1. re: LotusRapper

I had really good prawn wonton soup at Kwong Chow a few years ago. Hopefully I'm in their delivery zone. Thanks for the heads-up! :D

I agree with LR re New Sun- my in-law's love Western Chinese food and our go-to place in the 'hood is Sun Garden on Oak Street near 23rd (delivery only). Pretty solid all 'round, and their crispy noodle chicken chow mein is actually as good as anywhere I've tried. Free delivery over $20 8 km radius.

          1. re: Quattrociocchi

Q, are there any tables for dine in at Sun Garden? My little niece loves that type of chow mein, which we usually get at Long's, of all places.

            1. re: grayelf

There are a few but I would't recommend it as a dining experience; they just do not cater to the sit down trade

              1. re: Philx

This might warrant a new thread of its own: "Good Chinese Take-Outs" or something. The current thread title and context kinda buries all this good info :-)

                1. re: LotusRapper

                  Ask and you shall receive.

(Well, not always. But it seemed like a pretty good idea in this case.)

      2. Even without being a buffet, that might interest them just because they spend half their lives right in that area. My Dad has a lot of doctor's appointments, and the blocks around VGH are where a lot of them have their offices.

It would be less a place where they would go out for dinner, which is what I was trying to find, and more a place where they could grab lunch after an appointment. But grabbing lunch is also a worthy endeavor.

I'm not sure there are any tables at all in New Sun, Jacquilynne. I think it's all takeout and delivery.

          1. re: grayelf

They do have tables but it's a pretty sad little place inside. I wouldn't really want to eat there personally but I have seen some people when I've picked up orders. Unfortunately, they are only open from 4pm-midnight (11pm on Sundays) so no lunch option.

I find the food tasty, the portions are enormous and well priced. In particular, the veggies are very well cooked (lots of variety too not just bean sprouts). You can also request no MSG which I appreciate.

The delivery can be a bit sketchy in terms of timeliness so I usually call and pick up or allow a 15 min buffer on their estimated time.

        2. Iron Wok, upstairs from No Frills on 4th & Alma .... are they still around ? Used to get takeouts from there when it was still Buy Low downstairs. I remember the glowing flashes and howls of their extreme BTUs gas stove imbuing a lot of "wok hey" into their dishes.

And Connie's Cookhouse further east wasn't bad neither.

Iron Wok - not sure if that is still near name - was there a few months ago - not great lunch special when I was there. Connie's is better but I would say only acceptable. I used to love takeout from Szechuan Chongqing on Commercial - great dai ching and Szechuan lemon chicken and green beans; noodle dishes also good. Lost track of them 4-5 years ago when quality went down and prices went up - not sure what they are like at present.

It seems like Ridge Garden could fall into this category if the food is any good. I didn't try it when it was on Arbutus, nor have I been since they moved to MacDonald. Anyone know?

We had a fairly meh experience at Connie's the only time we went last year. Wouldn't return based on that visit.
