Don Mclean offers his take on the new Chow.....I offer you all "The Day The Old Chow Died"

Please sing/read to the tune of American Pie

A not so long time ago
I can still remember how that Chow used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my say
I could make our peoples day
And maybe they'd be happy for a while

But a cold July made me shiver
With every post I'd deliver
Bad news on the homepage
I couldn't take one more change

I can't remember if I cried
When I saw the recommend button had died
But something touched me deep inside
The day the recommend button died

[Chorus]
So bye-bye, old Chow format of my
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' "This'll be the day that old Chow dies
This'll be the day that I cry"

[Verse 1]
Did you write the board admin?
And do you have faith in any of them?
What if Jacquilynne tells you so?
Now do you believe in Thai Spring Rolls
Can Tofu save your mortal soul
And can I teach you to julienne, real slow?

Well, I know that you don’t like the changes
'Cause I saw you cringe lookin’ at the pages
You all hate this from the start
Man don’t bring up, the lil blue heart

I was a lonely foodie broncin' buck
With a pink smoothie & couldn’t’ give a f*ck
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the old Chow format died

[Chorus]
I started singin' bye-bye, ole’ Chow format of my
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' "This'll be the day that old Chow dies
This'll be the day that I cry"

[Verse 2]
Now for 2 days we've been on our own
And support of Chow is droppin like' stone
But that's not how it used to be
When Veggo sang for the king and queen
In a coat he borrowed from MGZ
And a voice that came from you and me

Oh, and while the king was looking around
The Mod’s took another thread down
The subject was adjourned
No explanation from Mods was returned

And while C. Oliver read a book on baking
A quartet practiced recipes for making
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the old Chow format died

[Chorus]
We were singin' bye-bye, ole’ Chow format of my
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' "This'll be the day old Chow dies”
This'll be the day that I cy"

[Verse 3]
Helter skelter in a summer panic
Posters flew off the boards in a manic
Eighty compliant threads and growing fast
The re-launch fumbled like a bad pass
Are the players running out of gas
I wonder how long these protest will last

Home cooking board you’ll find legumes
Gardening you can read about prunes
We’d all like to grab a last glance
Oh, but we never got a last chance

'Cause the Powers to be ordered the change
The playing fields just not the same
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the old Chow format died?

[Chorus]
We started singin' bye-bye, Ole Chow format of my
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin' "This'll be the day old Chow dies
This'll be the day that I cry"

[Verse 4]
We were on Site Talk asking for God’s grace
A generation lost in cyber space
With no time left to start again
So come on, Lingua be nimble, Tapas be quick
Carolinadawg sat on a candlestick
'Cause fire our only common friend

Oh, as I wrote this funny page
My hands nor heart hold any rage
No angel born in Hell
Could cause me to wish Chow ill

As the flame posts climbed high into the night
Looking for an ass to take a bite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the old Chow format died

He was singin' bye-bye, Old Chow format of my
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin' "This'll be the day old Chow I dies
This'll be the day that I die"

[Outro]
I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
My little blue heart un-clicked for today
I went down to Not About Food
Where I'd ran into a pretty cool dude
But the man said the music wouldn't play

And in the streets, the posters screamed
The newbies cried and the Mods dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The search function is still broken

And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
Held champagne flutes for a toast
The day the old Chow format died

And they were singin' bye-bye, old Chow format of my
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' "This'll be the day that old Chow dies
This'll be the day that I cry"

[Chorus]
They were singin' bye-bye, old Chow format of my
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin' "This'll be the day that I cry"

  1. You have far too much time on your hands.

    1. I applaud the effort, but I'll stick to Don's lyrics. And now, i'm going to do something I thought I would never live to do, and that's quote Styx, of all things! (I'm not even a fan, but you couldn't get away from this song on the radio in 1981.)

Singing, "Is it any wonder? He's got too much time on his hands..."

      1. Give it up and stick to your day job.....

        1. I absolutely hate parody songs, but I do applaud the effort and creativity you put into this. As to having too much time on your hands, sometimes something inside you just has to come out and you gotta let it out.

          1. I'm starting to believe the true genius of this is giving everyone something else to hate, thus taking their hate attention away from Chow!

Well, if that's what you were goin' for... ;-)

              1. re: mcf

Of course I was! Isn't it obvious! ;-)

                1. re: linguafood

I expect to hear your rendition of this on your music cloud next week. (Good stuff on there, honestly very nice!!! Put more up!)

              2. Cheers, big guy - I'll drink to fun!

(Hell, I'll even forgive you for the ear worm.)

That might work a lot better. "The night they drove old chowhounds down."

                    2. re: kaleokahu

"The Night They Drove Old Chow-Hound Down"

                      Jr is the name
And I sang on the Chow train
                      'Till The Moderators came
And tore up the boards again

                      In the summer of '14
We were hungry, moods were mean
By Aug the 10th, the rules had fell
It's a time I remember, oh so well

The night they drove old Chow-Hound down
                      And the bells were ringing
The night they drove old Chow-Hound down
                      And the people were singing
They went, "Na, na, la, na, na, la"

Back with my crew in Jersey
One day they called out to me
                      "JR, quick, come see,”
Off to law school goes Jackie….

Now, I don't mind change - if its good
And sharing opinions as we should
                      You say what you need
                      And share your best
                      But you should never
                      Write to create un-rest

The night they drove old Chow Hound down
                      And the bells were ringing
The night they drove old Chow Hound down
And all the people were singing
They went, "Na, na, la, na, na, la"

Like Veggo before me (RIP Brother)
                      I will work the boards
                      And like my brother MGZ
I try to entertain the hoards

                      Go to eGullet several said
But I for one, shot that dead
                      Several have gone on
But I swear by the mud below my feet
You can't raise a board back up
                      When you run in defeat

The night they drove old Chow-Hound down
                      And the bells were ringing
The night they drove old Chow-Hound down
And all the people were singing
They went, "Na, na, la, na, na, la"

The night they drove old Chow-Hound down
And all the bells were ringing
The night they drove old Chow-Hound down
                      And the people were singing
They went, "Na, na, la, na, na, la"

(sorry it took me awhile, lol)

                      1. re: jrvedivici

I think I like this one better, Jr. :-)

(Admits to being slightly disappointed at not being name-checked, even though name rhymes with many things: Fuss, bus, cuss, thymus...just to name a few.)

                          1. well done. how bout a jr/chow version of Alice's Restaurant for an encore?!
