Any restaurants serve Horse Meat on the menu in YVR area?

I saw some articles of a couple but 2 or more years back and one this year about Mamie Taylor's but menu online doesn't have it. How about special ordering at a restaurant?

  1. There's a short piece on the horse tartare at Mamie Taylor's here: and our own Dennis the Foodie partook in May but wasn't too impressed:

It's been on the game menu at La Buca in the fall before.

I'm going towards the end of Aug for a few days. I'll check around when I get there, but I'm starting to think I'm not going to be able to try it.

    2. Are you looking for basashi?

There are a few Japanese restaurants that serve it in town.

      1. Interesting reference to Granville Island Public Market in Wiki:

"There is a thriving horse meat business in Quebec; the meat is available in most supermarket chains. Horse meat is also for sale at the other end of the country, in Granville Island Market in downtown Vancouver where, according to a Time magazine reviewer who smuggled it into the United States, it turned out to be a "sweet, rich, superlean, oddly soft meat, closer to beef than venison"."

And the Time mag snippet (need subscription to access full article):

So ..... WHERE in GVPM is horse meat sold ?

There was a butcher on Kingsway a while back that sold it, IIRC, and definitely one on Hastings. I've never seen it at GIsle but then again it doesn't seem like the place to advertise you're selling horsemeat :-).

Checking Japanese restos is a great idea. Tsukiji and Seto both used to have it once upon a time per the interwebs.

I remember a store in the '70s on Hastings (opposite RayCam Centre) that sold horsemeat. Big sign on side of building said "HORSE MEAT".

Bought some horse meat from Columbus Meats on Renfrew several years ago and put it on the grill.

LR: Oyama has had horse deli meat in the past. Cheval?

            3. Just bought some today but a la salami. From Euro Deli on Davie. Packaged and looks like bressaola. Haven't tried it yet.

I'll settle for that if nothing else. Thanks

              2. Tsukiji and Seto Sushi have it seasonally. Both are in Richmond
