Nam Sandwich Shop

I had a really good banh mi at Nam on Queen W yesterday. I had the Lavong Fish. The baguette was super fresh with great texture. Fish was basa. I would have preferred a different fish but if that's what they use, fine with me. I think the fish was marinated in tumeric. Sandwich had lots of fresh dill, jalapenos, some kind of mayo based hot sauce, chunks of basa, and cilantro. Flavours were great and reminded me of the fish at Cha Ca La Vong in Hanoi. I assume the idea for this sandwich comes from there, although I'm not sure if cha ca La Vong is the name of the dish or the restaurant. Overall, it was really good and I'll definitely be back.

  1. Not one reply? You don't know what you're missing. I had another lavong fish bahn mi yesterday from Nam Sandwich Shop. This could be one of the great fish sandwiches in the GTA ;-) perhaps on par with the Fish Store, the fish steamed bun from 416 Snack Bar, or Busters.

We have been a couple of times for picnics at the park. Really delicious sandwiches. Love their bread. Hope they stick around!

Hey I'd hit that, but I'm never in that area. Would love Banh Mi to make it to the Danforth...

Oh wouldn't that be NICE! I love it there, will go out of my way, pay for parking and even stand in line...everything there is so good....

      2. I'd not heard of this place, so I just looked it up. Seems it's on Queen West just across from Trinity Bellwoods.

Will definitely give it a shot next time I'm out that way looking for a quick lunch.

It's not across from, but rather next to Trinity Bellwoods (old Parkette location).

I still prefer Banh mi Boys over these guys - food wise.

I have tried the thai chicken and all-veggie subs. I found the chicken a bit too greasy and the all-veggie subs on the soggy side. That said, the bread and the picked condiments hold up - good temperature and texture. A bit steep though, $7 for a sub - more than what Banh mi Boys are charging.

I love that they are right next to the park though, and has a much more relaxed atmosphere then BMB. I havent tried their Bao's yet - look forward.

I definitely prefer Bahn Mi Boyz..the bao's just weren't as good, and I was excited for the fish Bahn Mi but found it flavourless. Tried the new shrimp Bahn Mi and was breaded/fried shrimp with no great flavours...ok place for a bite if in the park but if I'll he's to BMB if craving hits

          2. Baguette is perfect. Toppings are great. The protein for me is all about the grilled beef.

              Yup, baguette is perfect.

I tried the grill beef bao yesterday. it was good but not great. I liked the way the texture of the beef but I think the bao is better at Bahn Mi Boys. I want to try that grilled beef in the salad roll. I bet that will be great.

I have try other sandwiches, but it will be hard because the la vong fish so good.

              1. re: acd123

Haven't tried their bao so I can't comment. The grilled beef sandwich is my go-to after trying most of the sandwiches. Second would be the pork belly but it's really not that satisfying so I don't bother.

                1. A friend recommended this place and I got a couple of the lemongrass chicken banh mi sandwiches - one medium spicy, one not (I asked for hot but they said they do mild or medium).

I really liked the bread and overall I thought it was a good banh mi.

However I ate the medium spicy banh mi and there was barely any heat at all, I thought I was had mistakenly eaten the other sandwich until at the end I tasted a bit of chilis.

                    Hello Janel,

Thank you for the review and thank you for stopping by!

Perhaps we should take it up a notch with our spicy levels! =o)
