Nice restaurant where we can wear shorts?

Looking to celebrate my buddy's birthday this weekend at a "nice" restaurant where we can wear shorts. No budget, cuisine, or location preferences. There will be four of us.

I'm thinking of Ma Peache or Blue Smoke. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Thanks - but my buddy just vetoed Blue Smoke since his parents are throwing him a bbq.

Any other suggestions would be welcome!

      1. You won't find many New Yorkers out to dinner in shorts, there also is no shortage of "nice" restaurants where you'll feel perfectly comfortable in shorts. So without more to go on other than the ability to wear shorts, it's hard to offer specific recommendations. Except here's one: my wife and I have been into Blue Ribbon Bakery Kitchen lately. Yummy food, ranging from comfort food (burgers and fried chicken) to more serious (but not too serious) eats. Casual but not divey. Reservations on opentable.

Can we wear shorts to Blue Ribbon Bakery?

        2. Depends on the kind of shorts.

You can get away with nice pressed capris or cropped pants most places unless its fine dining like say Le Bernadin or Daniel.

Shorts would mean Bermuda khaki shorts worn by most men. Not capris, or manpris :) The girls might be wearing denim short shorts though.

              girls...what age?

the denim Daisy Dukes will be cheap looking...screaming that you are out-of-towners.

will it kill them to dress up a bit and cover a few inches of thigh?

Not sure I agree with that. I think you can go to most places in NYC -- except the higher end places like you note -- in whatever shorts you happen to be wearing and be fine. I can't think of any place I go to on any sort of regular basis where wearing shorts would be a big deal, even if you're unlikely to see many (any?) others in shorts. Times they are a changin'.

            3. I can't imagine that you would feel that out of place at Ko wearing shorts.

              1. Minetta Tavern

                Spotted Pig

                Danji

                Any David Chang restaurant

Has Minetta Tavern become so casual nowadays that men wear shorts? The last time I was there, well over a year ago, most men were in suits or blazers.

I would feel strange at Minetta Tavern in shorts.

But I imagine some people do it.

Minetta Tavern is a good call. Though not many, I'm sure some do it there, and it's the type of atmosphere where not many are gonna notice in any event.

                2. In Summer I wear my uniform: Hawaiian shirt, nice cargo shorts and sandals. Except for obvious jacket and tie restaurants I've never felt uncomfortable.
Pick a place and give a call. They will tell you.
Except for places like Per Se and Jean Georges you should be ok.

                  1. I've seen people wear shorts at Annisa, that would be my top choice.

You could also wear shorts at Union Square Cafe, the restaurant is very accommodating and understanding of the summer heat.

I really enjoy Blue Smoke even though Mighty Quinn has better BBQ, Blue Smoke is larger, the environment is more fun and you can wear shorts.

                    1. Thanks everyone. We went to Bar Buolud and had a great time.

Any reaction to the shorts in question? Did you confirm before?

The lady at the front desk said it would be okay and we weren't the only ones at Bar Buloud wearing shorts. There was no issue at all with regard to our attire.
