      No tonkatsu either. Worthless list.

      1. re: Uncle Yabai

I guess it is how people have valued their visits. Nothing more nothing less. In the end it is worth something although it might not be possible to figure out how a personal preferance might match up with these scores. So in a way you are totally correct.

    2. Never thought to check because I would have thought the top restaurants in Japan would be completely Tokyo-centric, but that doesn't seem to be the case, as far as Tabelog rankings. Interestingly, only 2 in the top 10. Here are the top 30 scorers in all of Japan.

      1. Yanagiya (Gifu)
      2. Mizai (Kyoto)
      3. Tout la Joie (Nagoya)
      4. Saito (Tokyo)
      5. Tenzushi (Kitakyushu)
      6. Fogliolina della Porta Fortuna (Nagano)
      7. Takoyasu (Osaka)
      8. Tokuyamazushi (Ibaraki)
      9. Matsukawa (Tokyo)
      10. Nihonryori Takamura (Akita)
      11. L'Effervescence (Tokyo)
      12. Kyoaji (Tokyo)
      13. Point (Osaka)
      14. Hinode (Mie)
      15. Ca Sento (Kobe)
      16. Cucina Italiana Gallura (Nagoya)
      17. Florilege (Tokyo)
      18. L'Osier (Tokyo)
      19. Apicius (Tokyo)

Thanks, yes that is very interesting. I also find the comparison Tabelog vs Michelin quite interesting.

However comparing restaurant scores on Tabelog accross several cities might prove to be a misleading adventure. Keep in mind that it is the scoring from visits of the local population which is the basis of the ranking a restaurant gets on Tabelog. The score a local person would give a restaurant after a visit would be highly dependant on the average level he/she is used to be dining at. I assume the average level of restaurants in Tokyo would be much higher than in a smaller city. Because of that a restaurant of objectively the same level in Tokyo as a restauarnt in a smaller city would most likely get a lower score by a local from Tokyo than a local from a smaller city where the average retaurant quality level is lower.

        1. re: Roysen

While I tend to agree that there is some grade inflation with rankings based on consumer ratings, I don't inflate the ratings of Tokyo-based users either. Especially at these very high-end restaurants, I think there are common diners (ergo common raters) throughout Japan. Most locals don't tend to eat at these really high-end restaurants; some seem to be targeted for tourists and business travelers from Tokyo and other cities. When you cross-reference the reviewers and the top restaurants, you'll see that many span the geographies. So the top ratings seem to be consistent, and not quite so biased in the smaller cities.

          1. re: Roysen

In my experience, which involves actually reading the reviews and not just looking at scores, many of the reviews outside of Tokyo are still written by Tokyo (or Kanto) travelers. I'm sure the site has gained more non-Tokyo users over the years but reading reviews outside of Tokyo can be closer to a TripAdvisor feel.

        2. When I use TL I usually sort by food/taste, not these aggregated scores that include atmosphere, service, and CP.

That would probably be more valuable, yes.

          2. Hey, there is a Japanese restaurant in the top ten! Will wonders never cease?
