NYC report: The NoMad, Russ and Daughters Cafe, Baz Bagel and Restaurant, Momofuku Ssam Bar and more
First of all, thanks for all the information provided by the board, Chowhound is amazing.
My companion (R) and I spent a few days in New York last month, a visiting friend (V) joined us in some meals.
We went to Russ and Daughters Cafe and liked it there. He enjoyed his Bella's matzo brei and I had the new catch herring sandwich which was very good, and I had the Lower East Side cocktail, with gin, lime juice and cucumber that was very refreshing. I also went twice to Russ and Daughters, one day I had lox, alaskan salmon roe and cream cheese bagel and the other day lox, cream cheese and caviar, both excellent. Russ & Daughters is one of my favorite places in NY, miss it a lot.
Baz Bagel and Restaurant gave us a positive impression. He had the egg sandwich, I had the Nova salmon bagel and we shared a chicken salad that was excellent. Staff was very friendly, I would love going more times to taste other things.
The three of us went to Preserve 24 for the oyster happy hour, which is good (only blue point oysters, but for 1 dollar each, I can't complain!). They had beer and I had the happy hour cocktail made of gin, lavender syrup, lemon whch was ok, a little sweet. This time we couldn't make it to the Mermaid Inn, which has a very good happy hour (last january they had 2 east coast and 2 west coast oysters at the happy hour, plus other dishes).and the Ka
We went to Cata for some gin and tonics, as it was very hot that particular afternoon. We had been there last year and went back as their g&t selection is amazing. All the 3 types we had were good: I had the rhubarb one, R had the lemongrass and V had the lavender (I had it last time and for my taste this was the best). We shared the razor clams that were very good, patatas bravas were ok, chicken croquetas also ok and the foie gras was very good.
I had a lobster roll at Luke's (East Village location) that is always good, although I also love having Pear Oyster Bar one whch has more mayo, but didn't have time to go this time and R had the shrimp one that he likes as well. It's a good place to grab a snack and keep doing things or passing by late at night after cocktails nearby (as we did other times after drinking at Death and Company or Amor y Amargo).
We went to Momofuku Ssam Bar which is a favorite for us. We all had the Penicillin cocktail. We ordered the scallops tataki that was amazing, the uni dish with tofu and trout roe (the uni dishes that I had at Ssam are always delicious), buffalo pork buns that were good, softshell crab tempura with pimento cheese (last spring I had it there and kept thunking when I would have then again, though last year I think it was a slightly different preparation) and finally the spicy pork sausage that we all love. R and I went back at one night (I told you Ssam Bar is really a favorite),after having cocktails at Mayahuel and Pouring Ribbons, having againg the softshell crab, steamed pork buns and Katahdin/White Dorper lamb that was very good.
R and I had lunch at the NoMad, staying at the bar (we were doing some stuff nearby and we didn't have a reservation, but they had room at the bar which we kind of prefer by the way, we also like its decor a lot). R had the Bamboo cocktail (sherry, dry vermouth, orange and angostura bitters) which was excellent and I had the Paloma one (tequila, mezcal,lime), which was a long drink, that I'm not very fond of, I guess I should have asked more details about it before ordering. I had the foie gras terrine with Perigord truffle that was awesome, I could repeat it over and over, and R had the slow poached egg that he loved. For the mains, he had the suckling pig confit that he liked it a lot and I had the roasted beef and bone marrow that was also perfect. The Nomad is really awesome, it's a pity I don't have it nearby.
I still have some other places to tell, but I'll do it soon as I have work to do (and pounds to lose after the trip lol).
