Donuts in Santa Barbara?

We just moved down to Santa Barbara and are seriously itching for some good donuts. A preliminary search here and on other websites didn't bring anything up but was wondering if anyone had any tips. We'd be willing to go up to 30 mins outside SB too if that helps.

  1. Spudnuts won a local newspaper article blind taste-off a few years ago during the KrispyKreme craze. There are several loctions in town.

    I really like the Spudnuts on West Carrillo and De la Vina, where the new (old) Italian Market will soon be moving into the old Carrows location. This little shopping complex is looking like a nice new specialty stop for locals - inclusing those on a Spudnut's donut run.

    Local reviews - mainly very good but also some clinkers - splurge the $1.50 and and try it for yourself ;-)- plus you might like looking at more of the local Santa Barbara Dining reviews on this website. Not as good as Chowhound but far better than Yelp for local recommendations:

        Well, we ended up going to Spudnuts and it was decent. We tried about 8 different donuts between us all with favorites being the cronut and a buttermilk one, I believe. Wasn't impressed with the filled donuts and the atmosphere certainly leaves a bit to be desired. We're a little spoiled coming from Seattle with Top Pot and Mighty O Donuts but I'm sure we'll give it another shot at some point.

          About a year and a half ago I was driving through Santa Barbara and had a (basic raised) Spudnut at the shops at 220 West Carrillo Street and 3629 State Street. One was definitely better than the other, but I can't remember which. Which one did you go to?

          If you get closer to the LA area, the Spudnut I had (on the same trip) at 8225 Topanga Canyon Blvd, Canoga Park, was probably the best one I've had. Perfection!

      2. Have to put in a plug for the glazed buttermilk bars at Tyler's Donuts in Carpinteria. Dense and cakey -- not everyone's preference, I know, but they call to me.
