Love hatch chiles. Great flavor from mild to hot. I roast them myself either on the grill or hot oven. Cool in a paper bag and the skin falls off. They are from Hatch, NM and very special. Short season, end of summer.

              1. re: jessejames

Have you not tried these yet, JJ? You're in for a treat!

                1. re: cacio e pepe

I've had the kind strung up and dried but that's different I gotta give this a whirl looks right up my alley. Amazing that there's always something new in life to try!

            1. re: jessejames

The roasted chili's are often sold in boxes of 10 or 20 lbs, mild to hot varieties available. They freeze well and will keep 18 months in the freezer. I rough clean them before freezing by running under water to remove skins and seeds, let dry a bit on paper towels, and then put in portion size freezer ziplocks. Wear gloves. A bit of work, but worth it. Freezing seems to make them a bit hotter, so keep that in mind. Roasts tend to draw crowds, and sometimes sell out, especially late in the season, so go early. Some stores also sell unroasted Hatch, but I think it's easier to buy them roasted. Enjoy.

            2. Umami does a good Hatch Burger

thanks, looks nice -- i've had ortega burgers before. grilling up some anaheims now which is what i had just thinking about this.

                  1. How do the prices compare?

I'm assuming Bristol Farms is more expensive?

                    1. Last year Sprouts had great options. I hope they pop up again!

                      1. The Roasts are great fun though and wouldn't want to discourage the experience, but if you are intimidated by the amount you have to buy, most places now sell the chiles by weight as well. Although we have frozen and stored the chiles in the past, now we prefer to buy the chiles by weight and roast on our BBQ for the amount we need. The texture and flavor is better (The mass roasted chiles tend to fall apart as they steam in the bag.) We are okay with not having the chiles year around, it just makes this time of year more special (and tasty! ;))

                        --Dommy!

                        1. Gelson's in the Palisades on Sept. 7th

                          1. Any word of chile roasting near San Francisco this year?

A couple years ago I chanced to be in Alhambra just at the right time to score some fresh roasted Hatch green chile. There is no substitute.

Check Raley's, Whole Foods, Sprouts or local farmers markets. The Chowhound discussions for last year for your area may yield some suggestions - same vendors will probably have this year.

                            2. Not NM chiles but Weiser is roasting at the SM FM(Anaheim's IIRC among others) as well as some Okra (charred, yum).

                              1. These are fresh, not roasted, but my local Von's is offering NM hatch chilies for $0.99 a pound. I intended to roast a pound or two...

Good deal. For that price could be worth making more and doing up some sort of enchilada sauce too!

                                  1. re: jessejames

Oh yum, that sounds good. At that price, I'm going to toss the few frozen ones I have in the freezer from last year and start fresh!

                                      1. re: jessejames

I like both! Do you have a good recipe? Usually just use the canned stuff, or powdered.....ugh, I know!

                                        1. re: Dirtywextraolives

i like green with roasted green chiles skin/seeds off, some pickled green chiles (or sport peppers) blended up and some of that juice for tang, a little roux, chicken broth, schmaltz if i have some left over, onions, garlic, spices...it's never the same twice, sometimes green tomato or tomatillo, but that's the general idea for me...i love cheese and chicken enchiladas too much

                                          1. re: jessejames

Yum, that sounds great, thanks for the inspiration! Will let you know when I make some.....

                                2. Don't know if anyone published the Gelson's dates?

                                  1. So, went to my Von's and they don't have any hatch chilies.... Produce guy tried to tell me the Anaheim chilies were the same....sorry dude, not buying it. So my friendly checker said she would check with the produce manager, who's off today but will be in tomorrow. Perhaps other larger stores have them right now, but mine on PCH by Gladstones does not, at the moment.

Already sold out of the hot ones at my local Sprouts on Genesee in SD. I was told they "might" get some more...

                                        2. Nothing at an Albertson's inside the city of San Diego proper? I see places all around in your list, but none are in the city itself.
