Popcorn and soda pairings

We're having a weekly backyard movie for friends and neighbors. I promised popcorn and soda. Since I can't seem to ever keep it simple, I was thinking of pairing popcorn toppings and sodas appropriate to the movie. Tonight is Roman Holiday, with blood orange San Pellegrino and parmesan popcorn.

Thoughts for other films? (Theme is "Hidden Gems of Summer," if you're wondering how I came up with this lineup.)

Endless Summer
Moonrise Kingdom
Dog Day Afternoon
Breaking Away
Jazz on a Summer's Day

The Parent Trap
The Sandlot
Pee-wee's Big Adventure

  1. If I was expecting soda, I'd be annoyed to find all you had was orange flavored sparkling water. I like the stuff, but it's not soda.

I think the idea is nice, but I'd also be prepared to offer the standard buttered popcorn and cola type soda as well.

The San Pellegrino is actually a sweetened soda with some actual (albeit small) fruit juice content. It's not a LaCroix.

and its awesome in a cocktail! The pompelmo (sp?) one is even better!

Yeah, it's basically orange soda. I have the grapefruit one too—love that.

Yes! The pompelmo is wonderful with a little vodka on a summer evening.
Add a big bowl of popcorn and a great movie ....bliss.

To the original poster, what a nice neighbor you are to do this.

I don't drink much pop but a ginger ale would be good with popcorn.

I didn't have time to fancy up the popcorn (made my mother-in-law a birthday dinner from Jerusalem cookbook and a chocolate cheesecake, plus froze a ton of farmers market fruit), but I did spike the pompelmo soda with gin and it was fantastic with plain salted popcorn. And the movie was grand.

        2. I'm not that familar with most of the films but for one of the kid friendly films you could do a take on cracker jacks, or a popcorn version of chex mix.

Fresca would be nice with a spicey popcorn or a carmel corn with red pepper flakes....

And on a really hot night you will be a total rockstar if you pour soda slushies....(my 8yr old nephew freaked out over this! So did my 67 yr old dad ;)

If you're doing the Cracker Jack thing, you could have cola sodas and also some kind of "ballpark-type" beer available.

          2. Dunno if you're doing "adult" drinks as well, but champagne with some kind of decadent popcorn (truffle oil/parm) is really good!

            1. Pairings? Dunno.
              But here's some sodas:
Red Ribbon Cherry Soda -- The Parent Trap, just as sickeningly sweet, and reminds you of being a kid.
Boylan's Red Birch Beer -- I'd suggest My Hot wet american summer, but pick out something NE and go with it.
Red Ribbon Mint Julep -- Pee-wee's big adventure. You get bonus points if you point out what it really tastes like after the movie (yay surrealism!).
Boylan's Creme Soda (or mix your own nilla soda): Moonrise Kingdom, because it tastes like cotton candy.
Barritts' ginger beer -- anything british or Carribean.

              1. Endless Summer(surfing and international travel)
Furikake popcorn - tastes like the sea
Canada Dry green tea ginger ale - I would say iced tea but you asked for soda. The green tea and ginger would pair well with the furikake.
Alternatively, Coconut Macadamia toffee popcorn with Hawaiian Punch.

Moonrise Kingdom (Scouts & New England)
S'mores popcorn - toss chocolate chips, mini marshmallows with hot popcorn. Sprinkle with crushed graham crackers.
Moxie soda - an old timey New England favorite

Pee-wee's Big Adventure (movie ends at the drive-in movies)
                Classic buttered movie-theater popcorn
Cherry-cola fountain sodas in Texas-sized cups
