Fukurou - New Ramen Place in East Hollywood

  • 3

Small place opened July 1 on Hollywood Blvd. about 3 doors west of Normandie. The proprietor is happy and authentic Japanese. A real treat. KLOS was on the radio and it was an odd sensation listening to Paradise City while sitting in the Japanese decor.

No tea, but they have ice water.

They have two specials: a food special and a drink special. And they're each $10.

The food special is a bowl of ramen, 3 gyoza and teriyaki chicken. The drink special is two beers and a sake.

So for $20 you get fed and liquored.

But I just got the tonkatsu ramen. The broth was very rich, and the noodles were perfectly cooked, slightly al dente. I've never been to Japan, but I imagine this is what a home-cooked version of this dish would be like. It has the obligatory half soft-boiled egg, chopped green onion, of course the pork, which had a nice if freshly torched flavor, some mushrooms, bamboo shoots, seaweed and a slice of fish cake. It wasn't as refined as the version at Chibiscus, but I enjoyed it for what it was. And there's no other ramen in the immediate area. I'm sure I'll be back, if just to try some of the other dishes.

Hard to skip sapps right there tho but will try

    1. Mikey,
I think you got the "tonkotsu" ramen. Generally, there is no such thing as "tonkatsu" ramen.

      1. I drove by this place and noticed it. Didn't know it was actually run by japanese people. Place was dead empty from what i could see from the road. Glad you liked it. I will check it out next time i'm craving some ramen. Can't handle the crowds at Silver Lake Ramen anymore.
