Is NJ's "Italian Hot Dog" crazy?

At least Dickie D's got a mention.

  1. To call pizza bread a piece of plain pizza crust is an abomination,.

LOL...I completely and immediately picked up on the fact that the person had no idea what real, authentic, etc. "pizza bread" is. LOL.

We should get the author's address and send them some. LOL.

    2. No! I loved those dogs and miss them to this day! I admit though that when I tell people about them, they think it sounds odd.

      1. Dickie D's was always my favorite.....
live a few blocks away years ago..

        1. Potatoes and peppers? Nothing Italian about those ingredients! That's a Peruvian hot dog...

A Murphy Style Irish hot dog perhaps?

          1. Articles like this need to have geographical diversity... but I would have liked to see the ripper representing New Jersey.

With regard to the "Italian Hot Dog" -- the HuffPo article says it's a piece of plain pizza crust stuffed with peppers, onions and fried potatoes.... is it still a sandwich if it's wrapped in a piece of pizza crust?

As opposed to a hot dog stromboli?

                Yes!

(Actually, I was just poking at the people with strong opinions in the "Is a hot dog a sandwich?" thread http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/967293 .. but maybe I should let sleeping dogs lie!)

                  It's an Italian thing, Fugettabouttit!

LOL... when I saw the title of this thread I didn't think it was about hot dogs -- I thought it was about an Italian-American chowhounder who thinks he's really hot, but is actually crazy. Any nominations??

            2. I see that hot dog map is from Roadtrippers.com. I gave them a detailed map of just about every hot dog place in New Jersey for their website. They said they were interested. I even offered to gather a little write up on each location and if needed, take pictures. That was a few years ago they never got back to me.

              1. I don't think the Italian Hot Dog itself is 'crazy'...it's a rather tasty combination. But truth be told, it's much better (not to mention more 'Italian') when made with good Italian sausage rather than with the standard hot dogs most places use.

The only crazy thing about most Italian Hot Dogs (especially the ones from the most famous NJ purveyor of the genre) is that they're usually a badly executed and rancidly greasy mess.

I always get a combo hotdog/sausage with the works...
