Help with southern France Honeymoon next month

Looking for some advice on planning my upcoming honeymoon to southern France... Flying in to Nice on September 9th, and out of Lyon on September 19. Primary mode of transport is by train. I can rent a car if needed, but I'd prefer to eat dinner and not have to worry about driving after drinking wine.

We have accomodations in the following:
Nice - 3 nights
Cannes - 3 nights
Avignon - 3 nights
Lyon - 1 night

Most of the accomodations are right in downtown. Nice isa little off to the site, along the coast.

Looking for 1 or 2 fancy places for Friday night and Saturday night, but we typically prefer smaller more intimate type restaurants as opposed to big endeavors with fancy presentation. I've read through a lot of the recent posts and have a decent list of restaurants, but I'd like to nail down at least 5 or 6 options for each city to make sure we have our list covered.

Also would appreciate recommendations for bars to go to at night - we're not into clubs, but a place to get a nice cocktail with some atmosphere would be great.

Thanks in advance!

  1. In Cannes I'd recommend la Table du Chef, which we loved when we had dinner there last year (June 2013). You should be able to find other suggestions for the towns you mention by doing a search on this site (upper right-hand corner). Congratulations on your upcoming wedding.

    1. Hiely-Lucullus is an institution in downtown Avignon. Very good Provencal cuisine in an unpretentious atmosphere.

Yes, I know. I always recommend it here. I like dependable addresses.

        I also love Hiely.

Lots of good food to choose from for your one night in Lyon. If you want to go traditional, I'd recommend Daniel et Denise (the original location).

      2. We were just in Nice -I recommend Le Sejour cafe,L'esprit gourmand, and in the Old Town-le Bistrot d'Antoine. We had three excellent meals and the three I gave you were wonderful ,in descending order of price and stylishness. But all quite delicious!!
