Provence report July 2014 part 2 (St. Remy, Cassis, Nimes, Aix)
Cafe de la Place (St. Remy). Enormous salads of fresh ingredients, and some other non-salad dishes--albeit in a somewhat nondescript location in the corner of a parking lot. We (and seemingly several others at nearby tables) ordered the salade thai with marinated, very rare slices of beef. Good tiramisu dessert.
La Maison Jaune (St. Remy). One of the most atmospheric terrasses I have eaten at in France or anywhere; fairly quiet, facing an small alley or ruelle, with a view of small birds circling the partially ruined old church of st. remy which I believe was later the hotel de sade. As for the food, it was really excellent (we had the tasting menu at lunch, which I believe is similar to that at dinner). Included a cold melon soup, marinated anchovies with basil pesto on top of perfectly cooked coco beans, a filet of a white fish (bar?), and a small pigeon breast and leg. I have forgotten the desserts. Also a very nice server this year.
Yacht Club (Cassis). We went for lunch after a boat trip to the calanques. This is the only restaurant on the lighthouse side of the harbor, and thus offers a very nice view across toward the boats and the town. The food is good if not spectacular; it's a fairly casual place. Very reasonably priced.
L'epicurien (Aix-en-provence). We went here for lunch based on some chowhound research and it did not disappoint. Late arriving crowd but the place filled up (a small outside seating area in the place forum des cardeurs; they serve inside in colder weather I suppose). Standout dish was an appetizer of some sort of braised beef in something akin to a fried vietnamese/chinese roll. Excellent fish main course.
Nguyen Thanh (Aix-en-provence). Went here the same day for some takeout on the way to the opera (which starts at 7 pm and thus makes dinner difficult). It wasn't great.
Le Chapon Fin (Nimes). Near the Maison Carre. Good salads with fresh ingredients; there were a few non-salad options too. The salads were identical except for allowing a choice of chorizo or fried mussels as a component.
