Hawthorne Inn, Berlin, CT Closed

I just found out that the venerable Hawthorne Inn on the Berlin Turnpike in Berlin, CT has closed. This is surprising since the place has been around for decades. Not sure what happened but I am kind of sad to see it go. Hopefully someone will reopen it at some point soon. Jay

  1. The property (motel and restaurant building) has been for sale for many months. Mrs. B is a CT Licensed RE Broker and pointed it out to me when it came on the market.

    1. Hold up--are you sure? A recent post (July 13, 2014) on their Facebook page reads as follows:
"We are closed for Sunday Brunch today and July 20th but will re-open on Sunday, July 27th. Call for reservations! 860-828-3571 Hope to see you here!"

ETA: They also posted a pic of their new sign on July 9, 2014. So it seems their "closed for renovations" banner across their website is legit.

        This is very strange:

On July 13th, The Hawthorne posts they'll be opening on Sunday the 27th, but per the link from their local paper, <<A letter addressed to employees of The Hawthorne dated July 14 provided to town officials stated that “due to circumstances beyond our control, we have been forced to close The Hawthorne effective as of the close of business today, July 14 2014.”>>

Circumstances beyond their control: the couldn't meet obligations to the taxman and the banks. Had been on a cash basis with vendors for a while. Look for possible Ct Dept of Labor wage claims to show soon.

They canceled all the events planned there. I know because I had something planned there in a couple of months and got the email saying they were closed. I feel sorry for people who had plans in the near future. It is hard enough to plan something well in advance let alone in a few days. Fortunately I already found a place for the event. Now we just need to get our deposit back.

I hope you used a credit card for the deposit and might have some recourse.

                Otherwise, kiss your money goodbye.,

Oh, no! I truly wish you luck with the deposit and hope you have some sort of recourse as bagelman says. I understand about planning entirely, too. Fingers crossed.
