America's Test Kitchen Radio - beverage fads

  • 0

Toward the end of this hour-long program https://www.americastestkitchen.com/r..., Kimball discusses the current popularity of juicing with New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik, author of "The Table Comes First". Gopnik predicts that it will fall out of favor, citing previous beverage fads like flavored carbonated waters, and Starbucks. He points out that the latter is more about milk shakes, albeit disguised, than coffee. For baby boomers, there's an association with the soda fountain era of our youth; a place where you sit with others, drinking something that came out of a specialized machine that made its own distinctive noises. At first, people spend lots of time and money, then realize that they could make it cheaper at home. So they buy the home version to make it, without realizing how important the group experience was, and over time the drink loses its appeal. He mentioned the planned introduction of wine to Starbucks as a contender for the next trend.
