Sam Woo expanding to Rosemead, and other openings

Saw the sign today, Sam Woo coming to Rosemead in that new plaza next to McDonald's where the other Chengdu Taste is opening up (which I'm much more excited about). I hope this location is less like the San Gabriel location (which is quite mediocre), and more like the other two. Otherwise, I'll still be hitting up Sam's bbq in El Monte for Cantonese bbq for my work lunch.

Other openings nearby :
Chuan's took over the spot where Kaya used to be in temple City next to Old Country Cafe.

Chipotle taking over blockbusters old spot in the same plaza

Big Rice (Korean) is opening in a small spot next to togo's/Baskin Robbins

Lastly, a mini review of the newly opened Man Chan cuisine in San Gabriel:
Went the other day, and ordered a number of chicken dishes. The chicken itself, and the two sauces, are very good. The oily rice was more oily than flavorful, and they messed up on one order giving us normal steamed rice and kept telling us it was oily rice, and "came from the same place" as their oily rice, even though the color and taste were completely different. The sauces were a minced green onion, ginger & garlic, and a sweet & spicy red chili variety.

Chicken noodle was alright. Chicken good, noodles (hor fun), and soup were pretty mediocre.

Chicken curry rice was not what I expected. I had amazing chicken curry rice next to the tiong bahru market in Singapore, and was expecting something similar based on the pictures. What I got was below avg Cantonese style curry with their still-good chicken. (but no sauce!)

Overall, I'd give them a few weeks before going back. But their chicken & dipping sauces are solid.

  1. Nice report. Was wondering about Chuan's taking over Kaya.

Chuan's gonna be massive.. Seating for 134, live music, booze, the works.

I saw it while I was jogging by and snapped a pic. I'm assuming chuan (as in sihcuan?) is the style of cuisine? Or the guys name?

      Awaiting your report!

Thanks for the report blimpbinge. When construction started on that plaza over the creek on Valley, I wondered how many spaces would be restaurants.

Looks like they're quite aways from opening.

          1. re: TonyC

Former Kaya space has been empty for quite some time so curious to see how this long lived restaurant space will evolve.

          2. would anyone be willing to give me the address for the sam woo. i googled it and it doesn't show up. i googled the mcd's but there are 3 so...

            thanks in advance!

                  This Sam Woo serves breakfast.

As in scrambled eggs breakfast. With toast.

                    Indeed!

I hope to try it soon, because i was pretty underwhelmed by their bbq. Maybe it was just an off day, because I just had bbq from another sam woo (sg) and it was decent.

While none of the "Sam Woo's" are technically related, this one is like the adopted child.

So I wouldn't go with hopes of replicating BBQ from other Sam Woo's.

How is 'Chinese Western Breakfast'? I might be tempted by #2

Steve Jobs is an adopted child of Syrian-Swiss descend. Should I expect anything less than "Apple quality" at this "adopted" Sam Woo?

                            Think eWorld, not iTunes.

And Newton, rather than the iPhone.

Perhaps even the Mac III ...

Sorry but I can't think of a converse analog as misbegotten as the III.

                            1. re: ipsedixit

The Apple III? The LC III? I'm not familiar w/ a "Mac III." The LC III's were actually pretty good, for their day....

The Newton was a good idea.... W/ simply horrible execution. But that's what happens when you put the soda guy in charge of Apple.... Should've been what the Palm Pilots were.... But then we all know what happened w/ the Palm devices....

                              1. re: ipsedixit

Wow, although I have never been, I trust your analogy.
Since there are no lack of acceptable Sam Woo's or clones, I will definitely avoid this location and will also seriously suggest others not to waste their efforts in a Newton, eWorld or Mac II version of Sam Woo unless this place up their game.

                                1. re: FallingLeaves

i HAVE to keep going to the sam woo at 6th & valley since i discovered that one of the waiters is a cousin (by marriage). (no disocunts, no financial interest on my part)

                  2. Pardon my ignorance. Is there (or was there) an actual Sam Woo? If so, what's his story. Inquiring minds, etc.

                    1. not sure if this interests anyone but on saturday i saw the grand opening sign for sam woo and stopped in. unfortunately, it was around 11 am and i and others were turned away. they said they temporarily stopped and could not sell anything even though there was food. my impression so far is not very high...
