L.A. Dish of the Month, August 2014 -- Nominations

  • n

We all know the drill by now, but in case you do not. The idea is this: choose a 'Dish of the Month' for the LA area and then collectively try as many versions of this dish as possible during the month reporting back with details and photos. It's great to talk about places you've been in the past, but the idea is to explore new places and make new discoveries.

The dish that gets chosen might be something very specific (chili fries) but might also be more of a dish category (potatoes). It's up to everyone here, but it probably makes sense to choose something that locals are excited about trying and finding the best and most interesting versions!

Anyway, this is the nomination thread for August 2014 …you can nominate as many dishes as you want, but once we do the voting thread, it will be one vote per user.

To nominate a dish, please (please!) post it in ALL CAPS in the responses below. This thread will be open until I go to bed on July 25th.

          1. HAMBURGERS -- I know we did sandwiches but... Focus people!

                1. re: wienermobile

Can you find this at In N Out Burger?
                  Truly disgusting.

                      1. re: wienermobile

I recall hearing they will no longer make anything bigger than a 4x4 after that 100x100 came out. Anyone confirm or deny?

                        1. re: ns1

I heard or read the same or very similar.

You are my brother from another mother.

Ain't chicken feet or dickhead tacos

                                  2. re: jessejames

I like how you "whispered" it in lower-case. Makes it feel like a speakeasy in here. Shhh...pipe down or the coppers are gonna raid the joint!

                                    1. re: spoonlicker

Thanks and I'm really more of a rule breaker than maker so no objections on mocktails but not what i like

                                    1. re: ns1

Is a Shirley Temple considered a cocktail? Please say yes.

                                        1. re: wienermobile

Um, not that I wouldn't want you to participate, but I believe those are considered mocktails......

                                          1. re: Dirtywextraolives

Ok then how about an Arnold Palmer? or we could invent a Bill Murry.

                                            1. re: wienermobile

Well, an Arnold Palmer is just a concoction of 50/50 lemonade & iced tea, and it does not appear to be "trying" to be a cocktail, the way a Shirley temple and Roy Rogers do....garnish and all. But hey, whatever, if y'all want to include it under cocktails, that's fine by me......

                                      1. Just a last-day update:

The only two nominations that have received multiple mentions so far are Pasadena (I live in Westwood) and Cocktails (with my kidney situation, I must limit alcohol). So I am very unexcited about either leading option. Also, I have philosophical issues with doing areas (limited interest for those far away) and drinks (there are separate CH boards for those). So please second or third some of the other nominations or perhaps suggest new ones. I'll follow the majority, but I want this to be relevant for me...

Nosh just a note. The original intent from Chow was Neighborhood of the Month. I do understand why we prefer Dish of the Month but I like to see it switched up Every once in a while. Our foray into Koreatown sparked some great discussion and recent posts about K-town food have gone beyond Parks and Ondal 2. Remember it is only for a month and we can then get back to something like DEEP FRIED FOIE GRAS of the Month.

                                            1. re: ns1

Seconded. COCKTAILS and BAR/ PUB FOOD

                                              1. re: nosh

We can always do a separate post but noting we have had meat items listed and vegetarians that are hounds etc Sorry for your kidney condition that sucks.

                                                1. re: nosh

Just a question, I realize cocktails and Pasadena may not 'excite' you, but seeing how these are the only two that garnered any excitement from the participating crowd, should that really matter? I mean, was the condition of you taking on the managing of this thread dependent upon your participation and/or excitement of what was nominated and won the majority vote?

Also, noticed how burgers was the only other nom that received more than one vote. Yet what was chosen as the nominations, main,y French fries and delis, did not receive anymore than an one vote and were latecomers at that. How is this all decided? Thanks.

                                                  1. DELIS (JEWISH, ITALIAN, RUSSIAN, GREEK, GERMAN)

what about a vietnamese style deli?

                                                      1. re: ns1

                                                        VIETNAMESE AND MEXICAN DELIS TOO

                                                    2. Here is the tentative list for voting. i'll probably be up another 3 hours -- early tee-time tomorrow. if there are new nominations that get seconds or support for others, i'm open. but i do think voting should be limited to a few choices:

PASADENA (I'm not excited about neighborhoods or cities.)
COCKTAILS and Bar Food (not crazy about this one, either)
                                                      FRENCH FRIES

(Don't worry, I will withhold my own opinions on the voting thread.)
